I’ve often found myself in situations where people comment on my facial expressions, jokingly calling it a "resting bitch face." It’s a phrase that has caught on as a way to describe a neutral expression that might unintentionally seem unapproachable or stern. Interestingly, while I’ve never been compared to a shot of espresso—which implies energy and a jolt of liveliness—the resting face comment definitely hits home. In social interactions, our natural facial expressions can sometimes send unintended messages. For me, it took some time to understand that my neutral look wasn’t necessarily unfriendly, but instead a default state that others might misinterpret. This makes me more conscious of the way I present myself, especially in new environments. Yet, I’ve grown to embrace this trait as part of my authentic self, finding humor in the contrast between being calm and people’s perceptions. Comparisons like these, whether to a strong coffee or a resting expression, show how language and humor are used to connect and describe personality traits in a lighthearted way. They foster relatable moments and help us feel less alone in daily social quirks. Sharing these experiences makes for great conversation starters and reminds us to look beyond first impressions.
