Another year of homeschooling is almost here, and I honestly don’t know how summer went by so fast. 🥹 I’m not quite ready for it to end, but I am so excited to watch my boys grow, learn, and discover new things this year.
One thing that surprised me last year? We didn’t use our homeschool room nearly as much as I expected. I still absolutely love having this space, but most of our lessons happened around the kitchen table or curled up in the living room. There’s just something so cozy about learning wherever life happens.

Having homeschooled for multiple years, I've found that the beauty of homeschooling lies in its flexibility. While having a designated homeschool room sounds ideal, in practice, many lessons naturally flow to wherever the family gathers — be it the kitchen table, living room couch, or even outside on a sunny day. This approach keeps learning engaging and lowers the pressure around formal spaces. One tip I’ve picked up is to embrace a 'mobile classroom' mindset. This means preparing portable boxes or backpacks with essential supplies like notebooks, pencils, and lesson plans. When motivation wanes from sitting in one place, simply switch locations. For example, a science experiment under natural light by a window or a reading session outdoors can refresh both the kids’ and the teacher's mindset. Regarding schedules, starting after Labor Day has been a practical choice for us too. It allows for a relaxed summer rhythm and some much-needed recharge. It helps the kids transition smoothly without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. Engaging them early in planning the year's goals builds ownership and excitement. Balancing multiple children at different grade levels can be challenging but rewarding. Setting small group sessions and independent activity times allows focus on each child's unique needs. Tools like checklists and visual schedules keep everyone on track. Lastly, the emotional aspect is just as important — observing children grow, discover, and enjoy learning is fulfilling. I encourage other homeschoolers to share their experiences and start dialogue, creating supportive communities around this journey.
