Living with Bipolar

Today I woke up empty.

Not sad.

Not dramatic.

Just… hollow.

I keep asking myself what my purpose is

like it’s something I misplaced in a drawer.

I start everything.

I finish nothing.

My planner is full.

My drive is gone.

I want to do all the things

but time feels like it’s sprinting

while I’m still tying my shoes.

My OCD is both the blueprint and the prison.

My bipolar is quiet enough to look “high functioning,”

but loud enough to drown me out.

Anxiety and depression?

Just sprinkles on top of a sundae I never ordered.

All I hear today is the clock ticking.

Tick.

You’re behind.

Tick.

You should have figured it out by now.

Tick.

Everyone else has a plan.

And I’m still here

trying to organize the chaos in my head

long enough to build one.

I have the ideas.

The ambition.

The “I could be so much more.”

But I feel trapped inside myself

watching potential press its hands against the glass.

I know I’m capable.

I know I’m meant for more than this.

I just don’t know how to breathe long enough

to map it out.

And the clock keeps ticking.

... Read moreLiving with bipolar disorder often means facing an invisible storm. From my experience, it's not always the dramatic mood swings that define the condition but the quiet, persistent feelings of emptiness and restlessness that follow. One thing I’ve learned is that managing bipolar isn’t about completely suppressing the disorder but learning how to cope with its nuances daily. The poem-like reflection in the article perfectly captures a common experience—feeling like the clock is ticking faster while you struggle just to keep up. Planning can become a double-edged sword; a full calendar that promises productivity but also heightens anxiety when motivation fades. For many, including myself, co-existing conditions like OCD complicate this further, turning routines into prisons. I often found that embracing strategies like mindfulness helped me breathe through the chaos. Simple practices such as deep breathing exercises or grounding techniques can help calm racing thoughts and create a pause between emotions and reactions. Also, breaking tasks into smaller, manageable pieces instead of aiming for big achievements all at once reduces the pressure to ‘finish everything.’ It's important to acknowledge the weight of internal expectations too. The harsh self-criticism—“You should have figured it out by now”—can be deafening. Replacing this narrative with self-compassion and realistic goal-setting made a tangible difference in my journey. Support from communities, both online and offline, especially those highlighting #bipolarnotbroken narratives, reminds us that we are not alone. Moreover, mental health conditions can mask themselves behind what looks like high functioning. Many may appear successful while fighting a hidden battle inside, a truth this article highlights beautifully. Sharing these personal stories can reduce stigma and encourage others to seek help without fear of judgment. In summary, living with bipolar disorder is a daily balance of managing internal chaos and nurturing self-belief. It’s a journey of small steps, persistence, and learning to breathe even when the clock keeps ticking. If you or someone you know resonates with this experience, remember that reaching out and connecting with others can be a powerful part of healing.
