... Read moreWow, what an incredible day getting to dive deeper into our #nativeculture! Beyond just showing everyone how to use the Cibucan, it was a truly enriching experience that highlighted the continuity of Taino traditions. For those curious, the Cibucan isn't just any tool; it's a long, intricate woven basket-like press, traditionally crafted from resilient reeds or palm fibers. Its main purpose is ingeniously simple yet profoundly vital: to squeeze out the poisonous hydrocyanic acid from grated bitter yuca (also known as cassava or manioc) pulp, making it safe and delicious for consumption. This process is truly central to many indigenous food preparations across the Caribbean and South America, and seeing it in action was like stepping back in time, learning directly from the earth and our ancestors. The art of using the Cibucan, often lovingly referred to as 'NATIVE TEACHINGS: CIBUCAN' by our elders, involves several meticulous steps. First, the yuca roots are peeled and grated into a fine pulp – which, let me tell you, is quite a workout in itself and often a communal effort! Then, this damp pulp is packed tightly into the Cibucan. Once filled, you hang it, typically from a sturdy tree branch or a specially constructed frame, and use a lever or heavy weights attached to the bottom. As the Cibucan stretches under tension, its clever woven structure constricts, relentlessly pressing the toxic liquid — often a milky white — out of the pulp. It’s absolutely fascinating to see 'HOW IT LOOKS AFTER' the juice is extracted; the pulp transforms, becoming drier and safer, ready for drying or further preparation into flour. This flour is then used to create staples like casabe, a thin, crispy, traditional Taino flatbread that has sustained our people for centuries. What struck me most throughout the day was the powerful sense of community and intergenerational knowledge transfer. We had everyone involved, from seasoned elders patiently guiding us with their wisdom to the youngest members of our community. It wasn't just adults; 'KIDDOS HELP TOO!', eagerly watching, asking questions, and even trying their hand at some of the lighter tasks like helping to move the grated yuca. It’s so incredibly important to pass these vital skills down through generations, ensuring our cultural heritage remains vibrant and alive. The pure joy and pride on everyone’s faces, many with their beautiful, diverse features, including the lovely curly and long, dark hair I saw on so many, as we worked together under the Puerto Rican sun, was truly heartwarming. Later, gathered around a crackling bonfire, with the 'Puerto Rican flag' fluttering gently nearby, we all reflected on what a 'WE ALL HAD A BEAUTIFUL DAY'. This experience isn't just about preparing food; it's about identity, resilience, and celebrating our rich Taino roots. It makes me so proud to be part of a community that actively keeps these ancestral practices alive, reminding us of the profound wisdom embedded in our traditions and the strength of our collective spirit.
