12 Middle Eastern Restaurants you should try in NYC

3/17 Edited to

... Read moreIf you're anything like me, the rich, aromatic flavors of Middle Eastern cuisine are an absolute delight. NYC is a melting pot of culinary wonders, and its Middle Eastern restaurant scene is no exception. Beyond just knowing where to go, understanding what to look for and what to order can truly elevate your dining experience. So, let me share some tips and personal favorites to make your next Middle Eastern food adventure in the Big Apple unforgettable! When exploring the diverse options, don't just stick to the usual. While classic kebabs are always a fantastic choice – whether it's perfectly grilled meat skewers served with fluffy white rice or nestled on a red-spiced flatbread with grilled cherry tomatoes and parsley – there's so much more to discover. For instance, I've fallen in love with unique dishes like savory dumplings covered in a creamy white yogurt sauce, often garnished with pine nuts and fresh herbs. You can find delightful variations of this at places like Huda or Sami's Kebab House, offering a comforting and flavorful experience that’s a departure from the typical. And let's talk about appetizers! A good Middle Eastern meal always starts strong. While hummus is a staple – and you'll find incredible, creamy versions, sometimes topped with chickpeas and olive oil, or even shredded meat and pickled vegetables like at Boutros – make sure to explore other dips and spreads. Freshly baked flatbread is a must for scooping up every last bit. Don't forget falafel, those crispy, golden-brown chickpea patties that are perfect in a pita or on their own as a snack. Places like Dar 525 often serve a fantastic plate with falafel, rice, and salad. For main courses, beyond the sizzling kebabs, keep an eye out for hearty rice and meat dishes. I've enjoyed cylindrical servings of tender lamb or beef topped with a creamy white sauce and diced tomatoes, often garnished with fresh parsley, which are incredibly satisfying. Some spots, like Moustache Pitza, even offer delicious meatballs and rice or grilled chicken pieces on a purée. And for something truly unexpected, you might even find pizza with unique toppings like mushrooms, cheese, and poached eggs! If you're feeling adventurous, look for dishes featuring specific ingredients like vibrant barberries, which add a beautiful tartness to colorful rice served with grilled chicken breast, as I've seen at Eyval. It’s these little touches that make each restaurant stand out. Always ask your server for recommendations, especially if you're new to the cuisine – they often have hidden gems on the menu not to be missed. And don’t forget to pair your meal with a refreshing drink, perhaps a traditional mint tea or a unique Middle Eastern beverage. Enjoy your culinary exploration through the rich flavors of NYC's Middle Eastern scene!
