SOUR STRIPS from scratch 🤭🍓🫐🥭 for the final episode of homemade halloween—until next spooky season 👻
I still can’t believe how good these turned out!! And the main ingredient is FRUIT 🙏 Pleaseeee try & let me know what you think 😌
Homemade Sour Strips
2 cups fresh fruit of choice
1/4 cup agave (or liquid sweetener of choice)
juice of 1 whole lemon
1/2 cup granulated sugar (I used monkfruit)
Preheat your oven to 170F and prepare a quarter sheet pan by lining it with parchment paper (you want it to fully cover the pan stick over the edges)
In a food processor or blender, combine the fresh fruit, agave, and lemon juice until smooth. Pour into the prepared quarter sheet pan and spread evenly by tilting the pan. Place in the oven and bake for 4-6 hours, or until it’s no longer sticky to the touch. For some ovens, it may take longer!
Cut into 1/2 inch wide strips and peel off the parchment paper. Coat in granulated sugar and enjoy!
I used to think making candy at home was super complicated, but after trying this homemade sour strips recipe, I'm completely hooked! It's such a game-changer, especially when you want a sweet and sour treat without all the artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives often found in store-bought versions. Plus, seeing these vibrant fruit strips come to life in your own kitchen is just so satisfying. Trust me, once you try these, you might never go back to commercial candy! It's an incredibly rewarding DIY project for anyone looking to enjoy healthier snacks. One of my absolute favorite things about this recipe is how incredibly versatile it is. While I often use a mix of strawberries and blueberries, or sometimes just ripe mango for a tropical twist, you can literally use almost any fresh fruit you love! Imagine juicy raspberries, tangy blackberries, sweet peaches, or even pineapple for a tropical punch. If you're feeling adventurous, you could even try combining fruits like strawberry-lemon for a classic sour taste, or a mango-lime blend. Just ensure your fruit is ripe and bursting with flavor, as that’s where all the amazing taste comes from. This also lets you customize the sweetness and sourness exactly to your liking – a little more lemon juice for an extra zing, or adjusting your choice of sweetener. Speaking of sweeteners, while agave works wonderfully, I personally love using monkfruit as a sugar alternative for a lower-calorie option without compromising on that delicious sweet taste. It’s all about making this recipe work for your dietary preferences! Getting these fruit strips just right is easier than you think, but a few tips can make all the difference for a perfect batch. First, that parchment paper isn't just for easy cleanup – it's absolutely crucial for preventing sticking and ensuring your strips peel off perfectly. Make sure it completely covers your baking sheet, extending over the edges so no fruit puree touches the pan directly. When blending, aim for a super smooth puree; any lingering chunks will affect the final texture and drying time. The baking time can really vary depending on your oven's calibration; mine typically takes about 4-6 hours at 170F, but some ovens might need more or less time, perhaps up to 8 hours. The key indicator is that the fruit leather should be firm, pliable, and no longer sticky to the touch. If it feels tacky, it needs more drying time – don't rush it! Sometimes, leaving the oven door ajar slightly can help with air circulation for more efficient drying, or for those with a dehydrator, that's an excellent alternative method. And when it comes to cutting, a pizza cutter or a sharp pair of kitchen scissors works wonders for creating those neat, even strips. Once your delicious homemade sour strips are ready, you might be wondering how to keep them fresh. I usually store mine in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, but they can also last longer in the fridge for a couple of weeks. They make fantastic lunchbox additions, a guilt-free afternoon pick-me-up, or even a fun, healthier dessert option. I’ve even seen people get creative and use them as a vibrant garnish for cocktails or mocktails – talk about fancy! They're also a huge hit with kids, making it a fantastic way to sneak in some extra fruit into their diet in a fun and exciting form. It’s truly amazing what you can create with just a few simple ingredients and a little patience. Give it a try, you won't regret it!
