BIRTHDAY VIBES

After my amazing birthday trip to Puerto Rico, soaking in all those incredible #BIRTHDAYVIBES, I got really curious about how locals celebrate their big day. Even if I didn't get a personal serenade, the lively music everywhere made me feel the spirit. Food, of course, plays a huge role. Forget just a simple cake; we're talking about a feast! Dishes like savory 'arroz con gandules' (rice with pigeon peas), crispy 'pastelillos' (fried turnovers), and often a succulent 'lechón' (roasted pig) if it's a larger gathering, are staples. And let’s not forget 'pasteles' or 'mofongo.' While we enjoyed amazing local cuisine, knowing these are part of a birthday feast makes me want to go back just to try a traditional birthday meal! And then there’s the cake tradition, which has a fun twist! Similar to some Latin American cultures, there's often a playful 'Mordida' moment. The birthday person takes the first bite of cake, and then friends or family might playfully push their face into it! It's all in good fun, of course, and makes for some hilarious memories. I definitely saw some funny cake pictures online that reminded me of this. Beyond the food and music, community and spontaneity define these celebrations. Whether it's a beach gathering, a backyard BBQ, or a party at a local 'chinchorro,' the atmosphere is always festive. My own trip certainly had that festive feel, with everyone just enjoying the moment.
