Every week, we hear about rising rents, increasing costs, and how difficult it is for small businesses to stand out. At the same time, Singapore is home to thousands of amazing home-based businesses, creators and local brands that many of us simply never discover.
Maybe the problem isn’t that we don’t want to support local.
Maybe we just don’t know they exist.
That’s the idea behind BioME. We’re exploring whether a dedicated space to discover Singapore’s home-based businesses could make it easier for people to support local talent and passions.
We’re still in the early stages, but every business we feature helps us learn whether this is something Singapore needs.
Living in Singapore, I've often noticed how vibrant the home-based business scene is, yet many of these businesses stay under the radar. High rental costs and fierce competition make it tough for small enterprises to survive and grow, which is where platforms like BioME could really change the game. From my experience browsing local markets and hawker stalls, I've seen how authentic and high-quality these home talents are — from the soft pandan coconut cakes to handmade floral bouquets and specialty matcha lattes. However, without a centralised online space, many of these offerings remain niche and hard to find. This often leads people, including myself, to default to bigger brands simply because they’re more visible. What’s exciting about this emerging platform concept is its potential to aggregate these home-based businesses in one place, making discovery intuitive. By categorising products by location, price range, and type, it caters to diverse consumer preferences while boosting visibility for sellers. Plus, the integration with social features like profile links and hashtags could really help these small businesses build community and credibility. I also appreciate that such a platform could provide valuable rental support information and updates on government aid, like the S$1,200 rental support for market stallholders, which could be a lifeline amid inflation. Having a go-to marketplace that highlights these supports alongside products would empower both sellers and buyers. As someone who loves to support local and try unique products, I look forward to seeing how this concept evolves. It’s not just about shopping; it’s about strengthening local networks and celebrating Singapore’s entrepreneurial spirit. If more Singaporeans use such platforms, it could transform how we value and support home-grown businesses in a fast-paced economy.
