Reflecting on my experience as a teacher in the US, I often find myself wishing Puerto Rico had similar educational benefits. One of the most notable advantages was not having to clock in manually every day, which saved a lot of stress and time. The salary was another significant factor; US teachers generally earn more, which directly impacts motivation and overall quality of life. Another benefit I deeply missed was the flexible management of sick days or absences. In the US, if you couldn’t make it to school, you simply uploaded your absence via the platform and that was it—no hassle, no red tape. This kind of system eases teacher stress and supports well-being. Additionally, there were numerous ways to earn extra money, sometimes reaching up to $10k more annually, by taking on supplemental roles or tutoring. This kind of financial flexibility is rare but very much needed for educators in Puerto Rico. Lastly, the recruitment processes in the US were much more streamlined and less chaotic. A smooth hiring process helps teachers focus on what matters most: teaching and supporting students. Bringing these changes to Puerto Rico could significantly enhance the teaching profession here, making it more attractive and sustainable. It’s not just about the salary, but also respect, flexibility, and opportunity that help teachers thrive and feel valued.
