Turning a long layover into an unexpected adventure is one of my favorite travel hacks! I recently had a fantastic 5-hour layover in Amsterdam, and it was the perfect opportunity to taste a bit of Europe before heading to my final destination. If you ever find yourself with a few hours to spare at Schiphol (AMS), here’s how I made the most of it and how you can too! First things first: getting into the city from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. Trust me, it's incredibly easy! The OCR mentioned the train, and it’s definitely the way to go. Just follow the signs for 'Trains' (Spoor) in the airport. You can buy a train ticket at one of the yellow machines or ticket counters. I found it pretty straightforward. The train takes you directly to Amsterdam Centraal Station, which is right in the heart of the city, in about 20 minutes. This quick journey means even with a 5-hour window, you have a solid 3-4 hours to explore. Once you arrive at Amsterdam Centraal, the city is literally at your doorstep. My priority was to grab some food and coffee – a must after any flight! I stumbled upon a cozy cafe and definitely felt like I was in Europe. My next mission was to find a stroopwafel, and I highly recommend you do the same! It's a classic Dutch treat, and while it's pure sugar, it's absolutely delicious and perfect for fueling your exploration. I also passed by the Flower Market, which was so vibrant and colorful, even if I didn't have time to stop and shop extensively. Just walking around, taking in the charming canals and historic architecture, was a delight. I even spotted a beautiful church that looked really pretty, just like something you'd see on TikTok! One of the best parts was discovering so many cute shops. I love finding unique items, and there were so many places having sales – it was hard not to spend all day shopping! If you're into unique souvenirs or just browsing, Amsterdam's streets offer endless opportunities. Just remember to keep an eye on your watch, especially with a tight schedule like a 5-hour layover. For anyone planning a similar long layover, here are a few extra tips: Consider storing any large luggage at the airport so you can explore unencumbered. Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking. While my layover was 5 hours, these tips apply even if you have an 8-hour layover. The extra time would allow for a more leisurely meal, perhaps a quick canal cruise, or even visiting a small museum near the city center. Always factor in travel time back to the airport and allow plenty of buffer for security checks. Don't forget to grab a final coffee or snack before heading back to Schiphol for your next flight. Embrace your layover – it’s a fantastic bonus adventure!
