The Worst Books I Read
I read a lot of books last year, and some of them were absolutely terrible. I should have DNF, but forced myself to finish. The only book I didn’t finish was the Midnight Library. Have you read any of these below? If not- don’t waste your time.

Note: there are no spoilers
✖️The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose was sooo unrealistic. He’s a terrible husband, as we know, but he’s also just a stupid, poorly written character. And, as we find out, his wife isn’t fantastic either. But above all else, the entire premise of this book is unrealistic. Every page is an eye roll.
✖️Beach Read by Emily Henry doesn’t even take place on a beach. Ok, so they’re authors, but their books they write don’t either? The rivals to lovers thrope doesn’t even make sense because they weren’t actually rivals and there’s zero tension.
✖️It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover is a pile of sappy mush and not much else. Literally nothing to hook the reader, nothing to keep us reading. I kept hoping there’d be a plot twist or something exciting… but it never came.
✖️The Girl in the Garden by Kestra Pingree feels like a middle school fan fiction. The main character spends so much energy correcting her name, despite it adding absolutely nothing to the storyline other than her complaining… which she does throughout the entire book. It’s almost like this was a girl’s diary where she just complained all summer and decided to add a magical ghost wolf so her friends didn’t realize it was real life.
✖️Every City is Every Other City by John McFetridge had the sorts written dialogue in existence; it literally only used the word “said”. There wasn’t a single use of “asked” or “replied” or “shouted”. Every character “said” their line. So boring.
✖️Beachfront Bakery by Fiona Grace is like one of those tv shows where the people fall off their bikes and you can’t force yourself to turn it off even though you’re cringing the entire time. This book starts off bad and goes downhill with every page. Jealous pizza shop rivals that are actually brothers? Dueling bakeries? Detectives with a sweet tooth? Make it stop.

If you're looking for a guide to avoid the worst reads, you’re in the right place! Here’s a rundown of the most disappointing books this year. 1. **The Perfect Marriage by Jeneva Rose**: This book struggled with its believability, featuring poorly written characters that simply distracted from any potential plot. Readers reported rolling their eyes at every turn, leaving them frustrated. 2. **Beach Read by Emily Henry**: Contrary to its title, this story lacks a beach and offers a strained rivals-to-lovers narrative with little chemistry. It seems more like a writing exercise than a finished product, failing to deliver the tension one expects from rivals. 3. **It Starts With Us by Colleen Hoover**: Critics described this work as overly sentimental and devoid of an engaging plot, lacking the twists and excitement to keep readers invested. With all hype surrounding Hoover, this book came as a big disappointment. 4. **The Girl in the Garden by Kestra Pingree**: This novel gave off strong middle-school fan fiction vibes, with a character obsessed with name correction, which added nothing substantial to the storyline. Many found themselves bored rather than entertained. 5. **Every City is Every Other City by John McFetridge**: It was criticized for its monotonous dialogue, relying solely on the word “said” to carry conversations, which detracted from the reading experience. 6. **Beachfront Bakery by Fiona Grace**: This book read like a cringe-worthy TV show scenario, with an unrealistic plot that left readers wondering why they continued flipping pages. Feel free to add your own worst reads to our conversation and learn from others’ experiences with these lackluster offerings!
