The cover promised intrigue, and the premise — a long-buried secret among friends – definitely hooked me. As you might have seen from my initial rating, I landed on a solid 3 stars, and I want to share a more detailed breakdown of why. The core of the story revolves around a group of friends who share a dark secret: a twenty-year-old murder that was swept under the rug. This setup is incredibly compelling, drawing you into the lives of these characters who have carried this burden for so long. The immediate question is, of course, what happened, and how has it shaped their lives? Gunderson does a good job of introducing these women, making their everyday struggles and relationships feel quite relatable, even as this monumental secret looms over them. From the outset, the book delves into themes of loyalty, betrayal, the weight of secrets, and the elusive nature of justice. These are all incredibly important issues, and the narrative explores how a single event can irrevocably alter friendships and individual destinies. While it had serious potential to be a gripping five-star read, for me, the uneven execution of key plot elements brought it down to a solid, thought-provoking three-star experience.
