Often seen as just a transit hub, it offers a different side of Guatemala. It's a bustling metropolis with museums, historical sites, and a vibrant arts scene, if you have an extra day or two to explore. It's a stark contrast to the more laid-back pace of the smaller towns, showcasing the country's "mix of old and new." Getting around Guatemala is an adventure in itself! I quickly embraced the local tuk-tuks for short distances – they’re a fun and colorful way to navigate the streets, especially in towns like Panajachel or Antigua. For longer journeys, comfortable shuttle buses are readily available and connect all the major tourist spots. And yes, you'll definitely encounter some adorable stray pups wandering around, adding to the local charm – they're usually quite friendly! Overall, Guatemala offers an unparalleled blend of stunning natural landscapes, rich Mayan culture, and captivating colonial history. It's a country that engages all your senses, from the vibrant colors and sounds of the markets to the incredible flavors of the local cuisine. If you're looking for an authentic and unforgettable travel experience that genuinely delivers on "city and nature," especially in 2024, Guatemala truly deserves a top spot on your bucket list.
