Can you guess how much I spent?!

Guatemala - not too shabby for two weeks right?! I think one of my favorite things about traveling in south and Central America is that the cities are so different from my own (USA) that I am perfectly content walking around and exploring the cities, meeting locals, etc. No need to spend a ton of money for tours unless absolutely necessary (you’ll need to go through tours to hike most of the volcanoes. I absolutely loved Guatemala and am already planning my trip back! This is the place that introduces me to gorgeous volcano view :)

... Read moreGuatemala's charm isn't just in its stunning landscapes and vibrant culture; it's also incredibly kind to your wallet! After sharing my total spend of $1,173 for a two-week adventure, I wanted to dive deeper into how I managed to keep my budget so lean, especially for those wondering about the actual cost of living or daily spending expectations. It’s all about smart choices and embracing the local way of life. Let's talk about accommodations. My $619 for two weeks means I averaged about $44 per night. This wasn't luxury, but it certainly wasn't roughing it either! I looked for charming guesthouses or private rooms in highly-rated hostels, often booking a bit in advance. Staying a little outside the immediate tourist hotspots can often save you a significant amount, and you get a more authentic experience. Always check for places with kitchens if you're keen to cook some of your own meals – a huge money-saver! When it came to food and drinks, my $304 total worked out to roughly $21 per day. This might sound challenging, but Guatemala makes it easy and delicious! My secret? Street food, local 'comedores' (small, family-run eateries), and fresh market produce. A typical breakfast of eggs, beans, and plantains at a comedor might cost you just $2-3. Lunch could be a hearty caldo (soup) or a plate of chicken and rice for $4-6. I splurged occasionally, but for the most part, eating local kept my costs down and my taste buds happy. Activities came in at $250. This covered some entrance fees to ruins like Iximché, a guided hike up a volcano (which, as mentioned, sometimes requires a tour for safety and access), and maybe a boat trip across Lake Atitlán. Many of my favorite moments were completely free: wandering through vibrant markets, people-watching in Antigua's Parque Central, or simply hiking around the smaller villages. Look for free walking tours and don't underestimate the joy of simply immersing yourself in the local culture. One big category often overlooked in initial breakdowns is transportation. I mostly relied on 'chicken buses' (colorful, renovated school buses) and local colectivos (shared vans). They are incredibly cheap – often just a dollar or two for even an hour-long journey – and an experience in themselves! For longer distances, a tourist shuttle might be $10-25, which is still very reasonable compared to private taxis. By embracing these local modes of transport, you can keep your travel costs significantly lower. Finally, a few general tips for anyone planning a trip: Carry cash, as many local spots are cash-only. Grab a local SIM card (Tigo or Claro) upon arrival – it's inexpensive and invaluable. Learning basic Spanish phrases goes a long way in connecting with locals and sometimes even getting better deals. Keeping an eye on your spending and being mindful of your choices can truly make a difference. My total of $1,173 felt incredibly rewarding, knowing I experienced so much without breaking the bank. Guatemala is a place where every dollar stretches further, allowing for deeper immersion and truly unforgettable memories. I can't wait to go back and explore even more!
