Can you guess how much I spent?!

Appenzell - Sweet sweet Switzerland! I love you and you can be so expensive, but I’m so glad I found Appenzell! Accommodations are much cheaper in this small town compared to places like Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. While food and accommodations might still break the bank a bit, the hiking trails are mostly free and make for an incredible week of adventure. Appenzell is also only 2 hours away from Zurich, so hop on that train and make your way! You won’t regret it, I promise!

If you're like me and love to experience a destination fully without overspending, Appenzell is your hidden gem. I want to share more about how I managed this budget, especially focusing on the incredible local flavors and smart spending. First, let's talk about the Appenzell Foodie Experience. While my food and drinks cost around $350 for the week, I didn't feel like I missed out on anything! Appenzell is renowned for its culinary traditions. You absolutely must try the famous Appenzeller cheese – it has a distinct, spicy flavor thanks to its herbal brine. Many local shops offer tastings, which is a fantastic free activity! I also recommend sampling Appenzeller Mostbröckli, a delicious air-dried beef, and the sweet Appenzeller Biberli, a traditional gingerbread. To save money, I often bought fresh bread, cheese, and local cold cuts from small village stores for picnics during my hikes. Dining in traditional Gasthäuser (inns) for lunch often offers better value with their "Tagesmenu" (daily specials) compared to dinner. When it comes to smart budgeting and activities, Appenzell truly shines. The article mentioned accommodations were $471 for a week, which is incredible for Switzerland. To find similar deals, I recommend booking guesthouses or private apartments well in advance, especially outside peak season. Many accommodations also offer the Appenzell Card if you stay three nights or more, which is a game-changer! This card provides free public transport within the region, free entry to many museums, and even discounts on mountain railways (like gondolas, which was my main activity cost of $35!). This is key for an "accountant appenzell" mindset – maximizing value from your stay. Beyond the gondola rides, the region boasts countless free hiking trails that lead you through stunning landscapes. I spent days exploring rocky mountain paths, past charming traditional buildings nestled into cliffs, and through lush green mountains. Just walking through the picturesque villages like Appenzell itself, admiring the painted houses and local crafts, is an activity in itself. Don't forget that Zurich is only two hours away by train, making Appenzell an easily accessible and budget-friendly escape from the city. With a little planning and a savvy approach to local food and free activities, you can enjoy the magic of Appenzell, Switzerland, without breaking the bank, just like I did!
