Burney Falls is Out of This World!
Burney Falls is such a little sweet treat during a Northern California roadtrip! Get out and stretch your legs for a bit and see these mesmerizing falls! Don’t worry, you won’t be full on hiking for this one. Burney Falls is just a short walk from the parking lot and it’s perfect for a little stroll to stretch your legs. Because of this accessibility, more people are likely to be around. Try to get there early to enjoy the falls to yourself! Trust me, it’s worth it. Another tip is to bring cash. There is a $10 entrance fee and only cash payment is accepted. The last thing you want is to get to the falls and not be able to enter. Like I said, this is the perfect road trip pit stop, so add it to the itinerary!

Wow, if you're planning a Northern California adventure, you absolutely CANNOT miss Burney Falls! I recently visited, and honestly, photos don't even do justice to this incredible waterfall. It's truly a place that makes you feel like you've stepped into a fantasy novel. When should you go to experience this magic? My personal advice: aim for the shoulder seasons – late spring or early fall. Spring brings lush greenery and full water flow, making the 129 ft falls even more spectacular. Fall offers cooler temps and fewer crowds (though summer is popular for a reason!). No matter the season, getting there early in the morning is key. Not only do you beat the rush for those perfect, serene photos, but you also get to experience the falls in a quieter, more reflective way. Plus, the light filtering through the trees in the morning is just divine! The first thing that strikes you is that vibrant turquoise pool at the base. It’s not just pretty; it’s an active part of the ecosystem, fed by underground springs that keep the water a crisp 42°-48° Fahrenheit year-round. This constant flow, an astonishing 100 million gallons daily, is what keeps the falls so powerful and pristine. What I loved most is how accessible it is – literally a quick walk from the parking lot. But for those wanting a bit more, there's a lovely 1-mile loop trail that takes you down to the base and along the creek for different perspectives. It’s an easy stroll, perfect for all ages. Beyond the falls, don't just stop there! McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, where the falls reside, offers more to explore. There's a scenic 1-mile loop trail that encircles the falls, giving you different vantage points and a chance to truly appreciate its grandeur. You can also find picnic areas, perfect for enjoying a packed lunch with the sound of rushing water. For those interested in fishing, Burney Creek and Lake Britton (within the park) offer opportunities, just be sure to check for current regulations and permits. The park also provides camping options if you want to extend your stay and fully immerse yourself in the natural beauty. If you're building a Northern California itinerary, Burney Falls is brilliantly located right off Highway 89. It's about 4.5 hours from San Francisco, making it a fantastic half-day stop on a longer road trip exploring gems like Lassen Volcanic National Park or the majestic Shasta Lake region. Remember to bring that $10 cash entrance fee – it's a small price to pay for such an awe-inspiring natural wonder. Trust me, it’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave!
