I picked up the new Xtra Atto action cam for $260 on the TikTok shop.
Xtra Atto: $299/ 128GB
DJI Osmo Nano: $329/ 128GB
Now, you may ask be asking: “Why did you buy the Atto when you already have a Nano?” And to that, I say that simply: I have horrible impulse control.
Other than the visual software differences between the two, they are virtually the exact same camera. My one complaint so far is that with the Xtra app I’ve noticed that there’s no way to change the aspect ratio of your footage like how you can with the DJI app. With my Nano I’m able to film horizontally and export the same video in a vertical format for short form content. So far, at least at this moment in time it doesn’t seem like you can do it on the Atto.

While the initial thought was, "Why did I do this again?", it quickly turned into an opportunity to really put these two compact action cameras to the test. Many of you are probably wondering, just like I was, how the Xtra Atto truly stacks up against the more established DJI Osmo Nano, especially since they look so similar on paper.
From my personal experience, the physical build and design of both devices are incredibly similar. When I placed them side-by-side on my keyboard, as you might have seen in a previous picture, they almost look like siblings. Both are designed to be lightweight and portable, making them perfect for on-the-go content creation. The screens on both show clear recording information, like the 4K30 setting I often use, and their little green indicator lights let you know they’re ready for action. However, the real differences, as I’ve discovered, lie beneath the surface, particularly in the user experience and software.
While the article mentioned they are “virtually the exact same camera” aside from visual software differences, I've dug a bit deeper. Both offer impressive video quality for their size, capable of crisp 4K30 footage, which is fantastic for capturing dynamic moments. Image stabilization, a crucial feature for any action camera, feels robust on both, allowing for smooth shots even when I'm moving around. However, the ecosystem around the camera makes a huge difference. With the DJI app for the Osmo Nano, I’ve always appreciated the flexibility it offers. Being able to shoot horizontally and then easily reframe and export that same video in a vertical format for TikTok or Instagram Reels is a game-changer for short-form content creators like myself. This saves so much time in post-production.
Unfortunately, this is where the Xtra Atto, at least in its current state, falls short in my personal review. The Xtra app, while functional for basic tasks, doesn't seem to offer the same aspect ratio flexibility. This means if I want vertical content, I have to plan my shots vertically from the start, or deal with significantly more cropping in external editing software. This lack of a versatile app feature is a significant consideration for anyone serious about quickly adapting their footage for different social media platforms. Beyond this, I've also found the DJI app to offer a slightly more intuitive interface for adjusting settings and reviewing footage. For example, accessing and understanding the recording information feels a bit more streamlined.
Considering the price point – the Xtra Atto often being slightly cheaper at $299 compared to the Osmo Nano's $329 for the 128GB version – the Atto does present itself as a budget-friendly alternative. However, for those who prioritize seamless workflow and app functionality, the extra cost for the DJI Osmo Nano might be a worthwhile investment. If you're someone who just wants a basic, capable action camera for casual use and doesn't mind a bit more manual work in editing, the Xtra Atto could still be a good option. But if you're like me, constantly repurposing content for various platforms, the DJI Osmo Nano's software advantages make it the more practical choice in my book.
