Ancient Israelites in Egypt

The Ibscha Relief, an Egyptian depiction of the arrival of Semitic Hyksos, as displayed on the tomb of Khnumhotep ii at Beni Hassan

If you study ‘fake news’ from ancient Egypt, you would consider the Hyksos a band of nasty, marauding outsiders who invaded and then brutally ruled the Nile Delta until heroic kings expelled them".

In fact, the Hyksos had a more diplomatic impact, contributing to progress in culture …. Rather than an ‘invasion,’ it appears that as the centralized authority of Egyptian kings declined, elites at Tell el-Dab’a increased their local power until, by a coup or simply a slow, peaceful process, they took the Heka Khasut [Hyksos] title and became kings in their own right.

And Pharaoh said unto his [Joseph’s] brethren: ‘What is your occupation?’ And they said unto Pharaoh: ‘Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and our fathers.’ And they said unto Pharaoh: ‘To sojourn in the land are we come; for there is no pasture for thy servants’ flocks; [Genesis 47 3-4]

... Read moreThe history of the ancient Israelites in Egypt is often clouded by misconceptions, particularly regarding the Hyksos, a Semitic people who ruled parts of Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period. Their takeover is frequently characterized as an invasion; however, recent scholarship suggests a more nuanced view. The Hyksos, whose name means 'rulers of foreign lands', possibly entered Egypt through peaceful means, likely integrating into the existing socioeconomic structures rather than through violence. They are credited with introducing new technologies and cultural practices to Egypt, including advances in warfare, horse-drawn chariots, and new agricultural techniques. The biblical narrative also provides insight into this period. The story of Joseph, narrated in the Book of Genesis, highlights the economic interdependence between the Israelites and Egyptians. As shepherds, the Israelites were given land in Goshen, a fertile area that facilitated their increase in population and influence while resided in Egypt. This relationship set the stage for future events critical to both groups, especially during the later exodus narratives. Additionally, archaeological discoveries, including the Ibscha Relief, which depicts the Hyksos' arrival, offer further evidence of the blending of cultures during this era. Their reign thus represents a significant chapter in the history of both ancient Egypt and the formation of the early Israelite identity.
