直島にある黄色い南瓜は、現代アートの先駆者草間彌生氏による象徴的な作品です。この南瓜は瀬戸内海の美しい景観と調和しており、多くの観光客を惹きつけています。台風による流出という話題もありましたが、それがかえって注目度を高めたようです。 私も直島を訪れた際、この黄色い南瓜を見に行きました。夕暮れ時に訪れたのですが、曇り空でいまひとつだったものの、翌日少し晴れ間が見えたタイミングで写真撮影ができ、まさに幻想的な風景を収めることができました。周辺には鳥居やお地蔵さんもあり、アートだけでなく地元の文化にも触れることができるのが魅力です。 また、ベネッセハウスミュージアムでは南瓜をモチーフにしたお菓子やグッズも販売されており、訪問記念に手に入れるのもおすすめです。宮浦港から町営バスでアクセスし、「つつじ荘」や「ベネッセハウス」周辺で下車して徒歩数分と、交通も便利です。 この南瓜は単なるアート作品としてだけではなく、直島の魅力を象徴する存在となっています。アート好きの方はもちろん、瀬戸内海の自然や文化を楽しみたい観光客にもぜひ訪れてほしいスポットです。
