Rails: These are the edges of the board that run from nose to tail. They're crucial for engaging with the wave and controlling your turns. Thicker, rounder rails are generally more forgiving for beginners, while sharper rails offer more performance. Deck: This is the top surface where you stand. You'll usually put wax here for grip! Bottom: The underside of the board. It can have different contours (concaves, convexes) that influence speed and maneuverability. Fins: These are like rudders on a boat, providing direction, drive, and stability. Most boards have 1, 2, 3, or 4 fins. As a beginner, three fins (a 'thruster' setup) is very common and a great starting point. Leash Plug: A small indent near the tail where you attach your leash, keeping your board connected to you when you wipe out. Trust me, you'll be thankful for this! Beyond the parts, surfboards also come in different general types, each suited for different waves and skill levels.
