How to get your first pull-up

Ready to get your first pull-up? Here are 4 of the BEST exercises to do that!

1. Deadhangs:

In order to do a pull up you must be able to hang from the bar. Start with 20-30 seconds and gradually increase to 1 minute. This builds grip strength and endurance.

2. Scapular Pull-ups:

Begin in a deadhang, then pull your shoulder blades down and back. This primes your muscles for a proper pull-up. Aim for sets of 8-12 reps.

3. Inverted Rows:

Use a TRX (shown), smith machine, or barbell to row your body weight. Over time, aim to get your body more parallel to the ground. This makes it harder & more like a pull-up. Perform sets of 6-12 reps.

4. Banded Pull-ups:

Use a resistance band to assist your pull-ups. Start with 4-5 reps and work up to 6-8 reps. Gradually decrease band resistance until you can perform 4 unassisted pull-ups with a thin band.

5. Pull-up!

Once you’re able to do 4 pull ups with a light resistant band you'll be ready for your first unassisted pull-up! 🥳

... Read moreGetting my first pull-up felt like an impossible dream for a long time. I’d see others effortlessly pull themselves up, and I just couldn't crack it. What I learned on my journey is that it's not just brute strength; it’s about smart training, consistency, and understanding the mechanics of your body. These are some extra tips and insights that really helped me push past plateaus and finally achieve that exciting first unassisted pull-up! Before diving into the exercises, a proper warm-up is crucial. I used to skip this, but it makes a huge difference in preventing injury and activating the right muscles. My go-to quick warm-up includes some arm circles (forward and backward), shoulder rolls, and light band pull-aparts to get the upper back and shoulders ready. This really primes your body, especially for those crucial scapular movements, which are key for any pull-up beginner. Speaking of scapular movements, let's talk more about scapular pull-ups. This exercise is an absolute game-changer, and honestly, seeing a proper 'scapula pull up demonstration' made all the difference for me. It’s not just about shrugging; it’s about actively depressing and retracting your shoulder blades, pulling your chest up without bending your elbows. Imagine trying to put your shoulder blades in your back pockets. This movement is the start of every successful pull-up, and mastering it builds the mind-muscle connection needed to engage your lats. If you can't feel it, try doing them on the floor first, pushing your chest away from the ground while keeping arms straight – it’s a similar feel for your shoulder blades, helping you understand the 'pull up scapular movement diagram' in action. While inverted rows are fantastic, many people ask about 'floor pull ups' or ways to practice without a bar. Inverted rows are essentially a horizontal pull, and you can make them easier or harder by adjusting your body angle. If you don't have a TRX or smith machine, you can use a sturdy table! Lie under it, grab the edge, and pull your chest towards it. The more upright you are, the easier; the more horizontal, the harder. This builds that essential pulling strength in a controlled way, directly translating to your vertical pull. Achieving your first pull-up isn't a race; it's a journey of consistent 'pull up practice beginner' sessions. I aimed for 2-3 times a week, focusing on quality over quantity. Don't be afraid to deload with a thicker band or take extra rest days if you're feeling fatigued. Listening to your body is key. And remember, every deadhang, every scapular activation, every inverted row, and every banded pull-up is building you step-by-step toward that unassisted pull-up. The progress might feel slow at times, but trust the process and celebrate every small victory along the way!
