James 4:10
"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you."
God rewards humility: Those who humble themselves before the Lord will be exalted at the proper time. acknowledge your own limitations and sinfulness, and start depending completely on God, rather than worrying about your abilities or status.
God will put us through periods of testing.
Refining our character to be more like Jesus'. It develops our faith as it strengthens it.
God exalts people to display His grace, which also means our growth is rewarded by blessings as we we become more useful for His purposes.
If you've never been blessed by God after being used by Him then you've got to give it a try!
Because once you are, you'll want to continue. You'll look for opportunities to be used, there's no "accidental" about it!
When God lifts you up, you've been lifted. It's nothing like being lifted up by yourself or the world. There's no boating or bragging about it.
You'll know it and those around you will sense it. The believers around you will know it because we all know each other in a spiritual kind of way.
Our transformation from old to new is visibly recognizable and our willingness to love increases dramatically.
