"Selah: Trusting the Trail When the Path Disappear

Good morning 🕊

Psalm 62:8

"Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah"

Picture the "magnificent moment" of a quiet, beautiful walk with Jesus, resting in His security... a safe place well above floodwaters where it's just you and Him, until the trail bends and the terrain suddenly shifts...

The peaceful, lazy stroll becomes a worried hike when the path ahead disappears, and the "trails leading to nowhere" begin to overcome your senses.

What can be learned in that moment?

The shift from serene confidence to frantically, pleading prayers?

What changes in our mind, that toggles us over from bliss, into the waiting?

What lessons will be learned in the waiting?

Was the moment the focus shifted when you realized you were no longer just enjoying His company, but desperately needing His direction?

Did the "lazy walk" became a steep ascent where you started to doubt the path?

Did the conversation change? You stopped talking about the scenery and start "pouring out your heart"? You know that what He's best at! Hearing about your worries about your future, finances, relationships, or your calling?

"Oh God, can we please get to wherever it is we're going? Why are we waiting here?

I can't see the next step."

Were you pleading your case, arguing for a "better" or faster route than the one He had you on?

When our urge to rush forward creates a sense of "spiritual torture", it can be easy for us look down enticing trails, questioning why God has us standing still on a hillside when those other paths appear to lead to results.

"What did Jesus say about moments of anxious rushing?

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble." Matthew 6:34

Jesus, likely would not offer a map... but instead a change of perspective."

"Child, why do you look at the steepness of this hill and think it is wasted time? You are looking at the trail, but I am looking at your heart. You want to rush down that other path because it feels secure to your eyes, but I am developing a strength in you that can only be forged by waiting on Me."

The fastest way forward is holding on to Jesus and trusting Him always...not just when the path is easy.

The freedom of surrender, and pouring out your heart, can feel disjointed, but it's actually the ultimate form of surrender.

Being vulnerable with Jesus is liberating, not just your polite prayers, but your fears, anxieties, and frustrations as well, is a sign of a truly intimate relationship, not a lack of faith.

Pouring your heart out is not complaining; it is trusting Him with your deepest worries because He is your refuge.

When the waiting finally ends and you must leave the comfort of the "safe spot" to take the next, harder trail, it is only passable because He is leading.

The new trail looks rugged, uphill, and impossible on your own. It forces you to abandon your own understanding and rely entirely on His guidance.

Moving along the new trail with Him, you realize that the "torture of waiting" has prepared your muscles and your heart for the climb, making the new, difficult path a place of newfound freedom.

In the end, the "magnificent moment" was never really about the destination, but about the trust developed with your Guide.

"Selah" it's time to "pause" and intentionally reflect. The Christian walk is all about what happens in the "waiting".

Lord, You are my Rock and secure refuge in fear. Thank You for the steep trails that build inner strength. I surrender my anxieties and waiting, looking forward rather than back. As I trust Your leadership in this rugged, new path, strengthen my heart, Lord. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

* anxiety about the future?

* tendency to rush ahead?

* temptation to take "easier" alternative paths?

Waiting is "divine development" rather than a waste of time...

... Read moreReflecting on moments when the path suddenly disappears during my spiritual walk, I've learned that these times of uncertainty are not just challenges but divine opportunities for growth. The scripture from Psalm 62:8 reminding us to "pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us" resonates deeply with my own experience of feeling vulnerable yet safe when sharing my anxieties and doubts with God. Waiting can feel like a spiritual trial, tempting me to rush forward or choose seemingly easier routes. Proverbs 3:5-6 offers encouragement to "trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding," a reminder that true faith means submitting to His guidance even when the way seems rugged or unclear. During these seasons, I've found that the key is shifting focus from the uncertainty of the trail to the assurance of God’s presence and purpose. Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 6:34 about not being anxious about tomorrow helps me to live in the present day and embrace the growth happening "in the waiting." The act of pouring out my heart, fears, and frustrations has been liberating. It deepens the intimacy of my relationship with God, transforming what feels like spiritual torture into a strengthening process. Vulnerability isn't a sign of weak faith but a testament to trust. When the moment comes to leave the comfort zone and face steeper challenges, I realize that the waiting has prepared me—my faith muscles are strengthened, and my heart is more resilient. This journey is not about reaching a destination quickly but about developing trust and reliance on God as the ultimate Guide. Embracing these "Selah" moments encourages intentional pauses for reflection, recognizing that spiritual growth often happens in stillness and surrender rather than in hurried progress. Ultimately, trusting God when the path disappears has transformed my walk of faith into a journey of profound dependence, peace, and hope.
