"striving after wind"

Good morning 🕊

"Finding Rest in What Is"

"Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the appetite: this also is vanity and a striving after wind." Ecclesiastes 6:9

We live in a culture that treats satisfaction like a horizon, always visible, but never reached. We chase, we consume, and we wander in our desires, thinking the next achievement, the next paycheck, or the next "better" thing will finally do the trick... Quiet our souls.

Solomon, the wisest, richest man to live, calls this "striving after wind." It is a vaporous, exhausting pursuit.

But then, there's a whisper of wisdom, and... Better is the sight of the eyes.

This is not a call to mediocrity, but a call to presence. It is an invitation to stop looking over the fence at what might be, and to actually see what God has placed right in front of us.

Contentment is not about not having everything but still recognizing that what we have right now is sufficient, because it comes from the hand of the Giver.

When we fix our eyes on the Shepherd, the temptation to wander in our desires vanishes.

Today, stop chasing the wind. Find peace in the familiar, and be anchored in the blessing of the present moment.

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for what I have today. Forgive me for the energy I waste on constant, restless desire and for comparing my life to others. Help me find profound contentment in Your provisions, knowing You are my ultimate satisfaction. I choose to be grateful and honored for the tasks at hand. Amen.

... Read moreIn today’s fast-paced world, the feeling of never having enough seems almost universal. The article beautifully highlights Solomon’s analogy of "striving after wind" to describe endless pursuits that leave our souls unfulfilled. From personal experience, this resonates deeply. I have often found myself caught in the cycle of wanting more—more success, more possessions, more approval—only to realize that each achievement brought only a fleeting sense of happiness. What helped me break this cycle was a conscious shift toward embracing the present moment and recognizing the value of what I already possess. Reflecting on scriptures such as Hebrews 13:5, which urges us to be content with what we have, reminds me daily that God’s presence is the true source of satisfaction. Focusing on verses like Matthew 6:34 encourages us not to be anxious about the future but to trust in God’s provision for today’s needs. An effective practice to cultivate this mindset has been daily gratitude journaling. Writing down simple blessings—family, health, or even small joys—which often go unnoticed, helps in quieting the restless appetite for "what’s next." This aligns with the article’s message that contentment is not about having everything but recognizing that our current circumstances are sufficient because they come from the Giver. Moreover, I’ve found that pausing throughout the day to simply observe and appreciate the good around me – the "sight of the eyes"—creates a grounding effect. It invites us to be present and deflects the endless chase of future desires. Ultimately, embracing contentment is a daily commitment. It involves resisting cultural messages that equate worth with material gain and instead rooting identity and satisfaction in faith. The contemplative prayer shared in the article is a powerful tool to realign heart and mind towards gratitude and trust. For anyone feeling exhausted by chasing ambitions that never satisfy, turning to these biblical insights can offer a transformative peace. It’s a reminder that contentment is accessible and deeply enriching when we stop striving after the wind and embrace the blessings at hand.
