"City on a Hill"

"The City on the Hill"

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." Matthew 5:14

Imagine a wanderer, weary from miles of aimless walking, lifting their eyes in the dead of night. Through the thick, velvety blackness, a radiant glow cuts across the horizon. It is not a harsh, flickering streetlamp; it is the soft, intense brilliance of white limestone walls reflecting a million gathered candles. It is a city on a hill, and its glow is undeniable.

As the wanderer approaches, they are not met with the chaos of a disorganized camp. They see order, they feel warmth, and are loved..they move purposefully.

There is One Light source that holds all these smaller lights together... a central, blazing beacon that reflects within every home.

If you were that wanderer, would there be any question as to who rules that Kingdom?

The very atmosphere speaks of its Sovereignty. The love, peace, and unwavering truth, burn in the hearts of the people shouting his name louder than any neon sign ever could. They do not need a placard... their lives are a living proclamation of the King, Jesus, King of kings.

But look away, wanderer! Behind you lies another kingdom. It is a place that was once bustling, but it is now a wasteland, a modern-day Sodom. Its lights have been extinguished, not because they couldn’t burn, but because they abandoned the Source. It is a place of absolute darkness, having chosen the temporary pleasures of a sinful unforgiven lifestyle, over the eternal brilliance of the King.

And yet, in the center of that God-forsaken wasteland, a single candle flickers. One light. Only one. It is a desperate, valiant light, surrounded by overwhelming darkness, clinging to a promise that the shadows cannot even understand.

Your life is that city...

and the Light within you is not your own... your brilliance is the reflected glory of the LORD. Can your "city" seen? Or is it just shining on the inside of a basket?

If a wanderer came up to your life, would they recognize the King of your heart?

Pray:

Lord Jesus, you are the Light of the World, and you have called us to bear that light. Strengthen us to be a radiant city on a hill, to be set apart, and unwavering in the dark. Let our good works shine so brightly that all who see us are compelled to turn their eyes toward you...our King, Amen.

* Are you feeling like the city on the hill, or the solitary light in the darkness?

* What is one area of your life where the King wants to turn up the light?

There was a period in my life where I felt like that solitary candle flickering amidst overwhelming darkness — struggling to maintain hope and truth in a world that often felt chaotic and lonely. Yet, the reminder from Matthew 5:14 — "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden." — transformed my perspective. I began to see that the light I carry is not about my own strength or perfection, but about reflecting the radiant light of Jesus, the ultimate Source. Like the city described with its white limestone walls glowing softly from countless candles, each of us contributes to a collective brilliance when grounded in love, peace, and unwavering truth. In practical terms, being that city means actively choosing kindness in difficult moments, standing firm in integrity when tempted to waver, and openly sharing hope even when circumstances are bleak. As Ephesians 5:8 reminds us, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord." Embracing this transformation has encouraged me to evaluate my daily actions — is my 'city' visible, shining to those around me? The Psalms offer another perspective: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105). Incorporating scripture into daily meditation and journaling has been vital to keeping that light nourished and active within me. Every time I feel the light dimming, returning to these verses rekindles courage and clarity. Moreover, the image of the single flickering candle in the deserted wasteland resonates powerfully. It represents hope, persistence, and faith even when surrounded by darkness. At times, we may feel isolated in our convictions, yet holding fast to Christ’s promise that "the one who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of life" (John 8:12) sustains us. In summary, living as a "City on a Hill" is a call to reflect God's glory visibly and consistently. It challenges us to be intentional about the light we emit through love, good works, and steadfast faith. I encourage everyone to reflect on where they might allow the "King to turn up the light" in their lives and to trust that no small light is insignificant when it points to the Source of all brilliance.
