"Trading the Title for the Towel"
Matthew 18:4 "Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven."
The disciples were busy jockeying for titles, status, and positions of power.
They wanted a worldly kingdom with a clear hierarchy where they could sit at the top. Jesus brought their frantic power-struggle to a grinding halt by placing a child in their midst.
In the ancient world, children had no legal rights, no social standing, and zero power. By elevating a child, Jesus flipped human logic completely upside down.
In God’s economy, true greatness is defined by humility, teachability, and a complete lack of self-seeking ambition.
"I used to be a chef, a restaurateur, and the dishwasher. I drove the bus, steered the ship, and ran the whole show. For years, my life was a relentless cycle of managing explosive personalities, covering short-staffed shifts, and pulling my hair out over the "S.O.D."
But instead of prepping the Soup of the Day, I was constantly drowning in search of the Solution of the Day.
Like the rest of the world, I operated under the exhausting premise that you must fight for every single step, prove your worth daily, and be the "critic’s choice" just to survive.
"Silly me"... I thought being the boss meant I was winning!👌
But a society where everyone insists on being their own captain quickly tears itself apart. We build echo chambers, retreat into prideful cliques, and demand our own way, never realizing how deeply our self-seeking ambition degrades the world around us.
"Then I found Jesus, and my focus completely changed."
As age began to set in and the pressure to perform finally broke me, I looked at Matthew 18:4 and said, “No problem.” I traded my need to be on top for absolute faith.
The Holy Spirit shattered my urge to manage the universe and replaced it with a quiet, childlike trust.... after repairing my bald spot! 😮
Today, my ambition to climb the ladder is gone, replaced by a humble heart that simply wants to submit to His will and love the people right in front of me.
True greatness isn't found in holding the golden spatula; it’s found in holding the servant's towel.
Lord, forgive me for the years I spent demanding my own way and chasing human praise.Thank You for breaking my pride and teaching me to rest in Your authority.
Give me a teachable, childlike heart that finds its worth in Your love alone, and empower me to serve others with genuine humility today. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

In my own journey, I often found myself caught in the relentless pursuit of recognition and status—much like the disciples who struggled with titles and power. This constant chase left me exhausted and disconnected from what truly matters. Embracing the lesson from Matthew 18:4, where Jesus highlights that taking the lowly position of a child is the greatest in heaven, has been life-changing. The concept of humility in God’s economy reshapes how we view success and leadership. In a world obsessed with climbing ladders, being the boss, or holding a prestigious title, the invitation to surrender that ambition and instead carry the servant's towel is radical. It’s a call to serve others with genuine love, putting aside ego and pride. Maintaining a childlike trust isn’t always easy, especially when the pressures and expectations of daily life mount. I’ve learned that it requires intentional humility and constant surrender—a daily choice to let go of control and rest in God’s authority. Scriptures like Philippians 2:3-4 remind us to act without selfish ambition and value others above ourselves, which fosters community and peace rather than division. Moreover, 1 Peter 5:5 and James 4:10 reinforce the beautiful dynamic that God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble, and that lifting up happens when we humble ourselves before Him. In my experience as a former chef and business owner, the shift from chasing titles to embracing humility brought an unexpected peace and purpose.
