An Impossible Command?
What if the greatest commandment actually feels completely impossible to you?
In Mark 12:30, Jesus says: "And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."
It is a definition we have all heard.But to anyone living in survival mode, it can sound like a foreign language.
When your heart has been broken, mishandled, or abandoned, it walls up.It becomes a fortress.It is much easier to guard your heart when direct access to it is denied—sometimes even to God.Without knowing what a healthy relationship looks like, opening the door and inviting company inside feels like too big of a risk.
When isolation takes over, your soul feels completely empty.How do you give away what you have never actually received?
Look closer at the commandment.Your mind is exactly where healing can begin.
Loving God with your mind means choosing commitment, logic, and loyalty, even when your emotional feelings are completely absent.
If you survived hard times by relying on your intellect, your mind is a tool you already know how to use.
Through this lens, love becomes a daily decision to focus on.It is no longer an emotional standard you can't seem to meet.
Loving God with your strength means redirecting your energy.It means taking all that exhausting, hyper-vigilant survival energy and pouring it into simple, quiet acts of obedience instead.
God does not expect you to tear down your fortress overnight.He meets you exactly where you are today.He starts with your logical choices.He moves through your redirected strength.And slowly, gently, He heals your guarded heart from the inside out.
A Prayer for the Survivor:
Heavenly Father,Thank You that You meet us right where we are, even inside the walls we built just to survive. When our hearts are guarded and our souls feel entirely empty, thank You that You do not demand feelings we do not possess.
Thank You for accepting our logical choices, our quiet commitment, and our redirected energy as true, beautiful acts of love. Heal our wounds, soften our defenses, and teach us how to receive Your love so that we can one day freely give it back to You. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

Living through emotional pain and survival mode can make the commandment to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength seem not only challenging but unattainable. From my experience, the heart often builds walls to protect itself from further hurt, making openness feel like a risk too great to take. Yet, there is hope in focusing on aspects of love that don't rely on feelings alone. I found that redirecting my strength and survival energy into small acts of obedience and daily decisions of loyalty became a healing pathway. Loving with the mind, as mentioned in the original article, provided a rational foundation when emotions were scarce. This daily commitment, even in the absence of warmth or enthusiasm, was enough to start rebuilding trust and connection with God. Sometimes, it helps to remember Psalm 147:3 which promises, "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." This verse has been a source of comfort, reinforcing the idea that healing is a process and God meets us right where we are — even inside the fortresses we build around our hearts. Another practical approach is to renew the mind through scripture and reflection, as highlighted in Romans 12:2. Transforming our thinking away from fear and conformity to this world allows the spirit of power, love, and self-control described in 2 Timothy 1:7 to flourish. I tried to meditate on these truths daily, gradually softening my defenses and allowing love to grow within. Participating in supportive faith communities can also be invaluable. Sharing struggles with others who understand and encourage can create a safe space to practice vulnerability and experience love firsthand. This journey of loving God despite internal barriers is not linear but marked by progress through perseverance and grace. Each intentional choice to love, however small, builds toward the day when the heart feels safe enough to open fully. Healing is not about forcing feelings but embracing commitment, logic, and faith in God’s transformative power.
