Skopelos !!
Mama Mia chapel!! The most magical place I’ve ever seen ✨ #eurosummer #italy #mamamia #greece #summerbod
Oh my goodness, visiting the Agios Ioannis Chapel in Skopelos, Greece, felt like stepping right into the Mamma Mia movie! This isn't just any chapel; it's truly the most magical place I've ever experienced, perched dramatically on a rocky cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea. If you're planning a trip to Skopelos, making your way to this iconic spot is an absolute must. We rented a car, which I'd highly recommend for getting around the island's beautiful but winding roads. The drive itself offers breathtaking views, leading you to a small parking area near the base of the cliff. From there, the adventure truly begins! The chapel, as seen in the movie, is reached by climbing a series of stone stairs carved into the side of the rock. Don't worry, it's not as daunting as it looks! There are around 198 steps, and while it's a bit of a workout, the anticipation builds with every step. Take your time, soak in the panoramic views of the clear blue-green sea below, and enjoy the refreshing sea breeze. The green foliage clinging to the cliff adds to the natural beauty as you ascend. Once you reach the summit, the small white chapel itself is charming and serene. But it's the view that truly steals the show. You're surrounded by the vast expanse of the light blue sky, often dotted with fluffy clouds, and the sparkling Aegean stretches out endlessly. It's easy to see why this spot was chosen for such an iconic scene in Mamma Mia – the atmosphere is just so romantic and inspiring. I spent ages just gazing out at the horizon, feeling completely at peace. For Mamma Mia fans, standing where Sophie almost got married is an unforgettable moment. Even if you're not a huge fan, the sheer beauty and unique location of Agios Ioannis Chapel make it worth every step. I'd suggest going either early in the morning to avoid the crowds and the midday heat, or later in the afternoon for a spectacular sunset. Remember to wear comfortable shoes for the climb and bring water! While there isn't a specific 'Mamma Mia hotel' right next to the chapel, Skopelos island offers a variety of charming accommodations. Many visitors choose to stay in Skopelos Town or Glossa, both of which have beautiful hotels and guesthouses and are a convenient drive from the chapel. Finding a place with a sea view definitely adds to the Greek island experience! Overall, my visit to the Agios Ioannis Chapel was a highlight of my euro summer trip. It's more than just a movie set; it's a place where natural beauty, a bit of history, and a touch of cinematic magic come together to create an unforgettable experience.
