En mi viejo San Juan
Oh, Old San Juan! Every time I think of this enchanting city, my heart aches to return. My recent trip to Puerto Rico, or as many call it, Borinquén Querida, was nothing short of magical. I know the feeling of saying #adios💔🥹 to such a beautiful place, but the memories, oh, they last forever, and I always whisper #volvere. One of the first things that struck me about Old San Juan was its incredible architecture. It’s truly what makes this city famous! Walking through the cobblestone streets, you're immediately transported back in time. The vibrant pastel-colored colonial buildings, with their intricate balconies and charming courtyards, are a feast for the eyes. Each corner offers a picturesque scene, perfect for photography. I spent hours just wandering, admiring the Spanish colonial designs and imagining the stories these walls could tell. It’s not just about aesthetics; it’s about history preserved so beautifully. The iconic blue cobblestones, or 'adoquines,' add another layer of unique charm, especially after a little rain when they shimmer. Beyond the stunning architecture, there are so many incredible things to do and sites to explore in Old San Juan. You absolutely cannot visit without spending time at El Morro (Castillo San Felipe del Morro) and Castillo San Cristóbal. These massive fortresses, built by the Spanish, offer breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and the city. Walking their ramparts, you can almost feel the centuries of history and hear the echoes of battles past. They are a true testament to the island's strategic importance and incredible engineering. For a more intimate experience, I highly recommend just getting lost in the narrow streets. Calle Fortaleza and Calle del Cristo are bustling with local shops, art galleries, and quaint cafes. This is where I found some unique souvenirs and enjoyed delicious local coffee. Don't forget to visit the San Juan Bautista Cathedral, a beautiful and historic landmark, and the second oldest cathedral in the Americas. It's a peaceful respite from the vibrant streets. And let's talk about the food! Old San Juan is a foodie's paradise. From traditional mofongo to fresh seafood, every meal was an adventure. Look for local eateries away from the main tourist traps for an authentic taste of Puerto Rican cuisine. Enjoying a piragua (shaved ice) while sitting in a sunny plaza, listening to the sounds of the city, was one of my simple pleasures. To really soak it all in, put on some comfortable shoes and plan to do a lot of walking. The city is very walkable, and you'll discover so many hidden gems this way. The best time to visit is often in the cooler months, but honestly, any time is a good time for Borinquén. My journey through Old San Juan was more than just a trip; it was an immersion into a rich culture and a deeply personal experience. I left feeling a profound connection to this 'patria,' and I already know it won't be long until I return. If you're looking for a destination that combines history, beauty, and heartfelt joy, Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, should be at the top of your list!
