Tiny Toes
Woke up this morning and somehow… my toes hurt??
Not my back. Not my shoulders. My actual toes.
Ran back some footage from last night and it all started to make sense, posting off them to dive in, gripping the mat to recover, chasing positions like they owed me money. Turns out they’ve been putting in WORK.
It explains a lot… and yet somehow, not at all 😂

After experiencing sore toes following a rigorous jiu-jitsu practice, I realized how essential those tiny toes are in supporting dynamic movements on the mat. When grappling, toes often bear weight, grip the floor, and help maintain balance during swift transitions and holds. This can lead to unexpected soreness, especially if you’ve been intensively pushing your limits. From my experience, proper footwork and toe mobility are crucial in preventing injuries and improving performance. Stretching your toes before and after training, wearing suitable footwear off the mat, and consciously engaging your feet during drills can make a significant difference in comfort and agility. Toes aren’t just passive—they actively contribute to the complex maneuvers in sports like jiujitsu. Listening to what your toes are telling you also means acknowledging fatigue and allowing your body adequate recovery time. Incorporating exercises that strengthen feet, like toe curls or using a resistance band, can enhance endurance and reduce the chance of pain. Embracing the fact that even the smallest body parts endure the hardest work has given me greater appreciation for the physical demands of grappling and reinforced the importance of holistic care in martial arts training.
