The Apprentice 🪶
Yesterday evening I found a familiar face back on the fence.
I’m pretty sure this is the same young Swainson’s Hawk I photographed soaked after a storm a couple weeks ago. This time, things looked a little different.
One of the adults was perched farther down the fence while the other circled and hunted over the hill behind our house. And this youngster? He mostly sat right here, watching all of it.
There’s something pretty fun about watching a young hawk figure out how to be a hawk — especially when you’ve been watching his dad hunt over this property for years.
Looks like he brought the whole family around this summer. 🤎

Watching a young Swainson’s Hawk learn the skills needed to hunt and thrive in the wild is truly a remarkable experience. Over time, these hawks develop their hunting techniques by observing their parents, gradually gaining confidence and independence. In Cheyenne, Wyoming, this process unfolds against a backdrop of open fences and rolling hills, providing ideal conditions for young hawks to practice soaring and honing their predatory instincts. As I observed this particular youngster sitting quietly on the fence, the contrast between its stillness and the adult’s active hunting nearby was striking. The adult hawks’ vigilance and skill in scanning the landscape for prey serve as a live tutorial for the apprentice. It’s fascinating to see how these birds communicate and interact within their family group, often bringing the whole family together during the summer. This seasonal reunion emphasizes the social bonds that are vital for survival. From my experience, patience is key when photographing wildlife, especially raptors like the Swainson’s Hawk. Capturing moments such as a soaking after a storm or a contemplative youngster watching the world around it requires being attuned to subtle behaviors and timing. Nature photography not only documents these moments but deepens one’s understanding and appreciation of the natural world. For fellow nature lovers and photographers, spending time in locations like Wyoming offers incredible photo opportunities. The wide-open spaces, diverse bird species, and dynamic weather provide an ever-changing canvas for capturing compelling wildlife stories. Observing an apprentice hawk as it learns the ropes adds a captivating chapter to any wildlife enthusiast’s journey.
