First Harvest - July 3

2024/7/4 Edited to

... Read moreWow, what a feeling to finally bring in the first harvest of the year! Seeing those vibrant radishes, lush greens, aromatic dill, and crisp green onions emerge from the soil on July 3rd felt incredibly rewarding. It's moments like these that make all the hard work in the garden so worth it. I just wanted to share a bit more about my journey and some tips for anyone looking to enjoy their own homegrown bounty, keeping that amazing freshness alive! For me, the magic of gardening isn't just about the food, but the entire process. From planting tiny seeds to watching them sprout and grow – it’s a constant source of wonder. And when that first harvest day arrives, it’s like a celebration! Those radishes I picked? So much more peppery and crisp than anything you'd find in a store. I love slicing them thinly for salads or enjoying them simply with a sprinkle of sea salt. The variety of greens, like lettuce and spinach, are perfect for a fresh, vibrant side dish, and that dill? It's already destined for some homemade tzatziki or maybe even a fresh fish recipe. Speaking of freshness, that's really the key to enjoying your home-grown produce. Once you’ve got your first harvest in hand, the clock starts ticking to really savor that peak flavor and nutrition. For delicate greens, I always wash them gently and then store them in an airtight container lined with a damp paper towel in the fridge. This can help them stay crisp for several days. Radishes, once their greens are removed (which can draw moisture from the root), do best in a sealed bag in the crisper drawer. And herbs like dill and green onions? Treat them like a bouquet of flowers! Pop them in a glass of water on your counter or in the fridge, covering loosely with a bag, and they'll keep their zest for much longer. It's all about minimizing moisture loss and protecting them from ethylene-producing fruits if stored together. One of the best parts about having a garden, especially for a first harvest like mine on July 3rd, is the sheer joy of knowing exactly where your food comes from. There’s a connection to nature and a sense of self-sufficiency that’s truly empowering. Every bite feels more wholesome when you’ve nurtured it yourself. Plus, you get to skip all those unnecessary plastic packages and reduce your carbon footprint! If you’re thinking about starting a garden, even a small container garden on a balcony, I highly encourage it. You don't need a huge space to experience the satisfaction of pulling your own fresh veggies. The taste difference alone is enough to convert you, and the joy of a truly fresh harvest is unparalleled. It’s also a wonderful way to unwind and connect with the natural world around you. I'm already looking forward to what the rest of the season will bring after this amazing first haul. Happy growing, everyone!

The foliage finally died back, so it was time to harvest. I planted these in May. Turmeric takes about 7–10 months of warm weather to form big rhizomes. For my first time growing turmeric, I’m pretty happy with the results. #gardening #turmeric #harvest #gardener
