Old Man Cactus Update! 🌵
It’s been five months since I decided to plant my Cephalocereus senilis (aka Old Man Cactus) directly in the ground, and it’s safe to say he’s thriving! 🙌🏼
The Cephalocereus senilis, commonly known as the Old Man Cactus, is a unique and eye-catching addition to any garden. Native to Mexico, this cactus type is characterized by its long, white hairs that resemble an old man's beard, providing sun protection while allowing it to thrive in arid environments. In the wild, these cacti can grow to impressive heights—up to 15 meters—and can live for decades, making them a fantastic long-term gardening project. With proper care, including full sun exposure, minimal watering, and well-draining soil, your Old Man Cactus can flourish just like mine. It's essential to monitor for pests like mealybugs, which can thrive in the hair, to maintain the plant's health. For those considering planting this distinctive cactus, you might want to explore companion planting options that complement its needs without competing for resources.
