Hey everyone! If you're anything like me, you love a good backyard game, and cornhole is definitely at the top of the list. I remember wanting a set but balking at the price, so I decided to tackle a DIY project. It was so rewarding, and honestly, not as hard as I thought, especially once I nailed down the *exact dimensions*. The biggest hurdle for me was finding reliable measurements. There's a lot of conflicting info out there, but through trial and error (and a bit of research!), I finally got the official specs for a regulation cornhole set. Trust me, getting these right makes all the difference for a fair and fun game. So, here's the breakdown of what you'll need to know to build your own: The Board Surface: This is where all the action happens! Each board needs to be 48 inches long by 24 inches wide. I recommend using a good quality 1/2-inch or 3/4-inch plywood for the top surface. Thicker plywood will be more durable and prevent bouncing when bags land. The Hole Placement: This is crucial for scoring! The hole must be 6 inches in diameter. It should be centered 9 inches from the top edge of the board and 12 inches from each side (since the board is 24 inches wide). Pro tip: Use a compass or a template to draw a perfect circle before cutting. Board Height (Front & Back): This is where the magic of the angle comes in. The front edge of the board, where it touches the ground, should be between 2.5 to 4 inches high. The back edge of the board, supported by the legs, needs to be exactly 12 inches off the ground. This creates the perfect slope for bags to slide and hopefully, drop into the hole! The Frame: I built my frame using 2x4 lumber. For each board, you'll need two pieces cut to 48 inches (for the long sides) and two pieces cut to 21 inches (for the short sides, accounting for the width of the 2x4s on the long sides). This creates a sturdy base for your plywood top. The Legs: Ah, the legs! These are usually made from 2x4s as well. The length you cut them will depend on the angle you want when they're extended. A good starting point is around 11.75 inches long, cut with an angle at the top so they pivot smoothly and allow the board to sit 12 inches high at the back. Make sure to round the top corners so they can rotate freely when attached to the frame with carriage bolts. Beyond just the dimensions, remember to sand all your edges smooth to avoid splinters, and consider painting or sealing your boards to protect them from the elements. I found that pre-drilling all my screw holes prevented the wood from splitting, which was a lifesaver. Building your own cornhole set is incredibly satisfying, and with these precise dimensions, you'll be throwing bags like a pro in no time!
