Baka Baka #kakegurui
Ever since I first watched Kakegurui, one character immediately stood out to me, and it wasn't just her intense gambling skills. It was Mary Saotome, and more specifically, her iconic, often exasperated, declaration of 'Baka!' It’s a small detail, but for me, it perfectly encapsulates so much about her character and the thrilling, high-pressure world of Hyakkaou Private Academy. For those unfamiliar, 'Baka' is a Japanese word that loosely translates to 'fool' or 'idiot.' In Kakegurui, Mary wields it like a verbal weapon, directing it at opponents, allies, and even herself in moments of frustration. It’s not just a filler word; it’s a direct expression of her disdain, her confidence, and sometimes, her sheer disbelief at the stupidity or recklessness of others, especially when they gamble poorly or act against their own self-interest. When Mary first bursts onto the scene, she’s a force to be reckoned with. She's ambitious, calculated, and initially views almost everyone around her as beneath her, particularly those who fall prey to the housepet system. Her 'Baka!' serves as a constant reminder of her sharp mind and her judgment of those she deems intellectually inferior or strategically misguided. She often throws it at Ryota Suzui, the show’s more timid male lead, when he expresses fear or makes what she perceives as a foolish decision. It’s a harsh word, but coming from Mary, it often carries a strange blend of exasperation and, dare I say, a touch of tough love. What I find most fascinating is how the meaning and tone of her 'Baka!' evolve throughout the series. In the beginning, it's almost purely a taunt, a way to belittle her opponents and assert her superiority. But as she forms unexpected alliances, particularly with Yumeko Jabami, her 'Baka!' sometimes shifts. When she calls Yumeko 'Baka,' it’s often born out of frustration at Yumeko’s seemingly suicidal gambling habits or her unpredictable nature, rather than pure contempt. It becomes less about insulting intelligence and more about reacting to unbridled, irrational passion – something Mary, with her pragmatic approach, struggles to comprehend. Her use of 'Baka!' also highlights the cutthroat environment of the academy. In a place where a single gamble can determine your entire future, any perceived lapse in judgment or emotional decision-making is seen as a sign of weakness. Mary, ever the survivor, uses this word to articulate her impatience with such flaws, both in others and sometimes, in herself when she makes a mistake. It’s a character tic that profoundly deepens our understanding of her personality: fiercely intelligent, prone to irritation, and relentlessly competitive. It's a key part of what makes her such a dynamic and unforgettable character in the Kakegurui universe.
