Gilbert The Raccoon
Look at who I saved from being attacked the other nite by something that looked like a black and white coyote. Gilbert. Gilbert, has always been a nocturnal raccoon, but the next day after his predator encounter he started visiting me during the day. He's calm, focused on eating, and shows signs of trust in my presence, seeming to understand this is now a safe zone. He has a fur patch missing on upper back, likely from the predator attack.🦝 And, today, our boy Gilbert the Raccoon was deep in his gourmet routine at the bird feeder which is a change of routine for him since hes always been a nocturnal raccoon. I look out and this man is out here making biscuits in the birdseed like he’s trying to open a backwoods raccoon bakery. 👨🍳🧤 Just pawing and kneading the mix like, “Mmmm yes, sunflower base, millet crumble, with a cracked corn crust, perfection.” And if you look closely, you can see while he’s kneading, he’s doing this thing with his tongue, like a chef taste testing air, or someone trying to remember if they unplugged the curling iron. 👅🤨 Mouth open, tongue out, vibing. Like the birdseed unlocked a core raccoon memory. At this point I’m not sure if he was eating, praying, loving, or conjuring spirits of raccoons past. Either way, he was FEELING it. 👏 Honestly, he might be possessed by a southern grandma who used to make cornbread from scratch and just needed to touch every grain with love. 😂 I don’t know what made him do all of that, but I do know this, Gilbert’s got flair. He ain’t just surviving, he’s performing.

Gilbert's shift to daytime behavior suggests he has formed a bond of trust, indicating a unique relationship with his human observer. In nature, raccoons are omnivores, and their diet can include fruits, nuts, insects, and leftovers from humans, showcasing their resourcefulness. Observing their eating habits sheds light on their behavior; they often engage in playful and curious actions while eating, much like Gilbert did with the birdseed. The story of Gilbert serves as a reminder of the beauty of coexisting with wildlife. Providing a safe zone allows these creatures to thrive while also giving us the chance to observe their unique personalities and behaviors. Indeed, wildlife encounters can lead to unexpected but delightful moments, as showcased by Gilbert's charming kitchen antics.
