Listening to the audiobook is so much worse. The narrator made the (very valid) decision to make Eragon’s voice whiny. He complains far too much.
2. The Dark Tower / The Gunslinger by Stephen King
I was ENRAGED by the first instances of the word lobstrosities. And now my phone remembers it. Social media is ruining my life.
3. Can’t Spell Treason without Tea by Rebecca Thorne
Listen. I really wanted to like this one. But it isn’t cozy enough. Panic attacks and murderous queens woven throughout the whole story just doesn’t work for me.
4. Jade City / The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee
Another one I wanted to like. I just don’t care about mob families unless the characters are really compelling. And no one in this book really made me care.
When it comes to finishing a book series, I’ve realized that sometimes it’s the little details that really affect whether I can stay engaged or not. For example, I started the audiobook of Eragon by Christopher Paolini, and I found that the narrator’s choice to give the main character a whiny voice really took me out of the story. I love fantasy, but hearing Eragon complain so much was draining — it made the whole narrative feel less immersive and more like an extended gripe session. With Stephen King's The Dark Tower series, I honestly got stuck on the word "lobstrosities." It was used so often, I even found myself worrying about it popping up in everyday conversations because my phone’s autocorrect remembers it now! This might sound trivial, but repetitive quirky words can sometimes pull you right out of the atmosphere a story is trying to build. Also, social media’s humor related to these odd words kept reminding me of the book in an annoying way. Then there’s Can’t Spell Treason without Tea by Rebecca Thorne, which I really wanted to love. The idea of cozy mysteries generally attracts me, but the darker elements like panic attacks and murderous queens made it feel less light-hearted and more tense than I was prepared for. It was a tough fit because I wasn’t in the right mood for that kind of intense atmosphere, even though the writing itself was good. Finally, Jade City by Fonda Lee brought in a mix of martial arts and mob family dynamics—but since I’ve never been a big fan of stories focused on mob families unless the characters are particularly compelling, I just didn’t connect with any of them. The added action sequences weren’t enough to make me care deeply about the story or its outcomes. These examples taught me that finishing a book series isn’t just about the plot or the hype — it’s about how every element fits with your personal taste and reading mood. Narration style, character engagement, tone, and even small annoyances like repeated words can make a big difference. This has encouraged me to be more selective and forgiving with my reading choices, understanding that it’s okay to put down a series if it’s not the right fit for me at the time. It’s better for my reading joy to focus on books that truly resonate and keep me turning pages.
