Watching communication come to life never gets old! Today I modeled how to use GRID AAC software to request help, open a container, and put candy into an adorable llama piñata toy. By demonstrating functional, real-life communication, students can see exactly how to use their device with purpose — not just tapping buttons, but expressing needs, asking for assistance, and participating in a fun, motivating activity. Modeling language during play builds confidence, increases independence, and shows kids that their voice truly has power. Plus… who can resist candy and a llama? 🦙🍬

In my experience working with AAC users, incorporating playful and motivating tools like a llama piñata toy can significantly enhance engagement during communication therapy sessions. When students see communication modeled in real-life, meaningful contexts—such as asking for help or requesting more candy—this not only clarifies how to use the AAC device but also makes the learning process enjoyable and less intimidating. These skills are essential for fostering independence. The visual prompts, such as 'help,' 'more,' and 'question,' shown in the OCR content help reinforce vocabulary that is relevant and immediately useful. Moreover, modeling during play breaks down barriers and shows children that their voice has power, which is a key element in speech therapy and assistive technology. It turns the therapy into an interactive experience where communication is purposeful rather than mechanical button pressing. From my perspective, this kind of applied practice encourages kids to generalize skills beyond therapy into daily life and social interactions, which is the ultimate goal. To optimize this approach, I recommend clear and consistent modeling focused on a few core words or phrases during play. For example, emphasizing words like 'help,' 'more,' and 'like' aligns well with common early communication goals. Celebrating successes with positive reinforcement (and maybe a bit of candy from the piñata) can further motivate learners. Overall, combining fun, functional tools with thoughtful AAC software like GRID results in a powerful method to nurture communicative competence and autonomy for AAC users.
