This is probably the most popular alternative for those without a mug press. If you're using sublimation ink or Infusible Ink, your home oven can actually work wonders. How it works: You'll need sublimation paper (or Infusible Ink sheets) and a mug specifically coated for sublimation. After applying your design carefully (remembering to mirror it, just like I learned!), you'll wrap the mug tightly. Some crafters use butcher paper and special heat-resistant tape (like the one I mentioned for taping like crazy!). Others use silicone mug wraps to apply even pressure. My tips: Preheat your oven to the recommended temperature for your blanks (usually around 375-400°F). Place your wrapped mug inside, making sure it's not touching other surfaces. You might need to press different sections separately, which can lead to seam lines. For curved mugs, this isn't really practical, as the pressure won't be even across the surface. This is where a dedicated mug press really shines, offering that consistent heat and pressure all around. 3. The 'Iron On' Method (with extreme caution!) Okay, this one is for super small, flat transfers on very specific types of mugs (usually not ceramic). Think of applying HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) with a mini-iron or even a regular iron onto certain travel mugs that can withstand the heat. How it works: It's similar to applying HTV to fabric.
