Splash was all full of love and affection

It's truly incredible how much love and personality my red-eared slider, Splash, shows! Beyond all the adorable cuddles and 'turtle kisses' she gives, one of the most important ways I show her love is by making sure she has a healthy and balanced diet. When I first got my red-eared slider, I spent a lot of time researching what they truly need to thrive, especially since they're quite different from sea turtles in their dietary requirements. Keeping a happy, healthy red-eared slider like Splash, with her vibrant patterned shell and distinctive red stripe, means paying close attention to what goes into her food bowl! For a red-eared slider, diet changes as they grow. Juveniles are more carnivorous, needing more protein to grow, while adults become more omnivorous, leaning heavily towards plant-based foods. I always make sure Splash gets high-quality commercial turtle pellets as the foundation of her diet. These are formulated to provide essential vitamins and minerals. I look for brands specifically designed for red-eared sliders, as they offer a balanced profile. But pellets aren't enough! Fresh greens are absolutely vital, especially as Splash has grown into an adult. I offer her a variety of dark, leafy greens several times a week. Think romaine lettuce, collard greens, mustard greens, and dandelion greens – these are packed with nutrients. I always avoid iceberg lettuce because it's mostly water and lacks nutritional value. Sometimes, I'll chop up small bits of other vegetables like shredded carrots or squash for a little variety. It's fun to see her pick through her greens! Protein sources are still important, but I give them less frequently now that Splash is older. When she was a little hatchling, she'd gobble up small crickets or mealworms. Now, they're more of an occasional treat, maybe once a week or every other week. Sometimes, I'll even offer a tiny piece of cooked, unseasoned chicken or fish, but very sparingly. It's all about balance to keep her energetic and her patterned shell strong. Fruits are also a special treat, given very infrequently due to their sugar content. A small piece of apple, a few berries, or a sliver of melon can be a nice surprise, but certainly not a daily staple. I always make sure to chop everything into tiny, manageable pieces so she can easily eat it in the water. That's right, I feed her in a separate tub of water to keep her main tank clean – a tip I learned early on! Clean water isn't just for feeding; it's crucial for their overall health and digestion. And speaking of health, I also make sure to provide a calcium block in her tank and occasionally dust her food with a reptile vitamin supplement that includes D3. This helps ensure strong bones and that gorgeous, strong patterned shell. It's a small effort that goes a long way in keeping my red-eared slider happy and healthy for many years to come. Watching her thrive on a good diet makes all the effort worthwhile, almost as much as her demanding cuddles!
