Michael Bonfante wanted a horticultural-themed amusement park. To expose children to horticultural. He manipulated trees into interesting shapes. The park was first known as Bonfante Gardens is now know as Gilroy Gardens in Gilroy, California.
My first visit to what was originally known as Bonfante Gardens, now Gilroy Gardens, left me absolutely captivated – especially by the legendary Bonfante Trees! I'd heard whispers about a place where trees were living sculptures, but seeing Michael Bonfante's horticultural artistry in person was truly something else. It's not just a botanical garden; it's an experience that sparks wonder in both kids and adults. Walking through the park, you quickly realize these aren't your average trees. Michael Bonfante had a unique vision: to expose children to horticulture in the most imaginative way possible. He didn't just plant trees; he manipulated them, patiently guiding their growth over years to create incredible shapes. I remember seeing one massive tree with a thick, textured trunk featuring numerous circular holes that looked like natural windows to another world. Another one had its lower trunk split into two perfect arching branches, creating a natural gateway that felt almost magical to walk through. The creativity is boundless! There’s a particular tree with an eye-shaped opening that actually has a sign asking, 'Do I look like an OPTICAL ILLUSION?' And right nearby, another one shaped into a square loop, complete with a sign querying, 'Do I remind you of a REVOLVING DOOR?' These interactive elements make you stop, think, and appreciate the immense effort behind each living artwork. I even spotted a magnificent Bonfante tree whose branches formed a wide arch over a pathway, leading to a charming blue sign for 'CLAUDIA'S GARDEN.' Each tree tells a story, making the experience far more engaging than a typical garden stroll. It’s truly a testament to Michael Bonfante’s dedication to horticultural education and his belief that nature can be both beautiful and fun. The park, located in Gilroy, California, is a fantastic family destination. Beyond the incredible shaped trees, Gilroy Gardens offers various rides and attractions, but for me, the highlight remains these living masterpieces.
