Having personally experienced relocating from Illinois to Ohio, I understand the mix of emotions that come with leaving behind familiar surroundings and facing an uncertain future. One of the hardest parts of such a move is losing your 'home base'—the place where you feel most grounded and comfortable. When your family also relocates, as my mom did in 2016, it adds another layer of complexity because the ties to your previous life begin to fade. It’s common to feel a sense of dislocation or even trauma during this period. Living in Ohio, I've slowly learned to embrace the new environment and community. Finding local groups or forums, such as those discussing #ohio, can provide valuable support and a sense of belonging. It’s also important to acknowledge your feelings and give yourself time to adapt instead of expecting instant comfort. Although I’m often asked if I am “the hottest girl in Ohio,” I remind myself and others that identity extends beyond geographic labels. It’s about personal growth, experiences, and connections you build in your new home. Sharing stories and engaging with those around you can transform a daunting move into a fulfilling journey. Ultimately, moving states reshapes your perspective and resilience. It’s a chance to rediscover yourself and cultivate new roots, even if the transition feels incredibly traumatizing at first. Patience, community involvement, and self-compassion are key to adjusting well in Ohio or any new place.
