⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (4/5 spooky-lake-stars)

Okay listen… maybe my expectations were sitting somewhere in the mud at the bottom of that haunted lake, because Wow.... The Haunting of Payne Hollow absolutely dragged them out by the ankle in the best way.

This book checked so many chaotic boxes, it felt like a paranormal bingo card:

Eerie mission from a dead grandfather? ✔️

Murderous father with "therapy needed immediately" vibes? ✔️

Repressed memories leaking out like a glitching VHS tape? ✔️

Undead lake creatures that definitely do not want to be your friend? ✔️✔️✔️

I was pleasantly surprised by how twisty and deliciously weird this story got. Every time I thought I knew what was happening, the book said, “Oh… you think? Adorable.” and proceeded to throw another creepy surprise at me.

And the ending? Wrapped up tighter than a body in a horror movie basement, plus a dog gets adopted. Literally the sacred rule of spooky fiction: if a dog gets a forever home, I am emotionally obligated to boost the rating.

If you're craving eerie vibes, family trauma, paranormal weirdness, and twists that whisper “just one more chapter,” this book is calling your name.

…possibly from underwater.

But like… in a fun way. 😈📚

... Read moreThe Haunting of Payne Hollow stands out as a unique addition to paranormal thriller literature, weaving together classic spooky elements with fresh, unexpected twists. Readers who enjoy stories with deep family secrets, haunted legacies, and supernatural creatures lurking beneath the surface will find this novel particularly gripping. The inclusion of an eerie mission passed down from a deceased grandfather adds a personal and emotional layer to the haunting atmosphere, while the portrayal of a murderous father imbued with psychological tension adds complexity to the familial dynamics. Repressed memories, a common theme in horror and psychological thrillers, are skillfully depicted here as fragmented, glitchy VHS-like flashes, adding a retro feel that intensifies the sense of confusion and suspense. The undead lake creatures are not mere background elements but active sources of fear and danger, enhancing the story’s suspenseful and creepy vibes. The book’s pacing, with twists appearing just when the reader thinks they understand the plot, makes it an ideal choice for fans of unpredictable horror fiction. Notably, the warm touch of a dog’s adoption at the end provides a comforting contrast to the dark, eerie narrative, adhering to a beloved horror trope where a pet’s safety symbolizes hope and resolution. Overall, The Haunting of Payne Hollow offers both horror enthusiasts and casual readers a rich, immersive experience filled with paranormal intrigue, family drama, and spine-chilling suspense. Whether you’re drawn to ghostly missions, psychological trauma, or mysterious creatures, this novel promises to deliver a haunting read that’s hard to put down.
