2024 Moments ✨Spain Edition✨

Going to Spain was probably some of my most favorite trips of 2024. While knowing the language (although Spaniard accents and dialects are so different from the Caribbean and Mexican ones that I’m used to) and being able to read and recognize what things were was a plus, I loved how much of home it reminded me of.

I’m from Florida so having the beaches so close, the sun shining, the sea air to breathe in was splendid honestly. Before this trip we had been in Germany for a little over 2 years and hadn’t been back to the states even to visit so homesick is a bit of an understatement.

Besides that though, the food was AMAZING. My favorite was the squid ink paella which I had my doubts about but am so glad I went out my comfort zone. Barcelona also had a spot where we had the best Indian food we’ve ever tried -and know we’ve had a lot. Out of all the places we had visited: Barcelona, Valencia, Sevilla, and the Canary Islands, Tenerife was my absolute favorite. InshaAllah we go back when the kids are older and get to experience it again.

While exploring, we had some charming animal encounters – like seeing a tortoise up close! These little moments reminded me that travel isn't just about famous landmarks; it's also about connecting with the local environment. If you're planning a Spanish adventure, especially to regions like Andalusia, prepare for some fantastic opportunities to witness wildlife. Andalusia is home to diverse ecosystems, from the vast wetlands of Doñana National Park, where you might spot flamingos, deer, and even the endangered Iberian lynx, to the rugged mountains where eagles soar. Even in smaller towns or rural areas, you might encounter wild horses, goats, or a variety of birds. For families, seeking out local animal parks or even just observing common street animals can be a delightful mini-adventure. It adds a layer of authenticity to your journey, reminding you of the rich biodiversity of the country. Speaking of rich experiences, my absolute favorite part of the trip was undoubtedly the Canary Islands, particularly Tenerife. The article mentioned the amazing squid ink paella, which I highly recommend trying, but if you find yourself in the Canaries, you absolutely must dive into the local cuisine, especially the famous Mojo sauces. Mojo sauce is a staple of Canarian cooking, and it comes in two main varieties: Mojo Rojo (red mojo) and Mojo Verde (green mojo). Mojo Rojo is typically made with red peppers, garlic, cumin, and olive oil, and it can range from mild to delightfully spicy. It's fantastic with roasted meats, grilled fish, or even just slathered on some crusty bread. Mojo Verde, on the other hand, is usually prepared with green peppers or cilantro/parsley, garlic, and olive oil, offering a fresher, milder flavor. My personal favorite way to enjoy Mojo was with 'papas arrugadas,' or 'wrinkly potatoes.' These are small potatoes boiled in very salty water until their skins shrivel and become deliciously salty. Served with both Mojo Rojo and Mojo Verde, it’s a simple yet incredibly flavorful dish that perfectly captures the essence of island dining. Imagine sitting by the ocean in Tenerife, savoring these salty potatoes dipped in vibrant, garlicky sauces – it’s an experience that truly transports you! Eating authentic local dishes like this, far from the usual tourist fare, made my time in Tenerife even more special and solidified it as my top destination on the trip. Don't miss out on these authentic flavors and unexpected natural wonders during your Spanish travels!
