KITTEN & Bunny Besties!
I always get asked if someone adopts a bunny if their cat or kitten will harm the bunny. My answer is always. ‘NO! They will become best friends!’ This is Rozer, the KITTEN, hanging out with his best friend, Cricket, the Holland Lop bunny! #ViralAnimals #ForYouPage #FYP #springwillowranch Wentzville, MO 63385 #ExplorePage
It's true, when people see Rozer, my playful kitten, and Cricket, my calm Holland Lop bunny, snuggling together, the first question is always: 'How?! My cat would never!' And I always smile, because their bond is truly something special. I used to worry too, like many first-time pet parents, about bringing a new bunny into a home with a curious kitten. But what I've learned is that with patience and understanding, cats and bunnies can absolutely become the best of friends, true BESTIES! When I first introduced Rozer and Cricket, I made sure to take it slow. I started by letting them get used to each other's scent without direct contact. I'd swap their bedding, or let one explore an area where the other had been. This helps them acclimatize to new smells without feeling threatened. After a few days, I allowed supervised, short interactions with Cricket safely in her enclosure, so Rozer could see her but not pounce. It's all about positive reinforcement and making sure both feel secure. Over time, I gradually increased their supervised playtime. Key things I watched for were signs of relaxed body language from both of them. A bunny flopping over, or a cat slowly blinking and purring, are great indicators. If either seemed stressed – a bunny thumping, a cat flattening its ears – I'd calmly separate them and try again later. Never force an interaction! It's also super important to ensure your bunny has plenty of escape routes and hiding spots where a cat can't follow, giving them a sense of safety. People often ask about the cat's prey drive. While cats are natural predators, many can learn to distinguish between prey and a housemate, especially if introduced young like Rozer. Providing plenty of toys and enrichment for your kitten can help redirect their hunting instincts away from your bunny. Also, never leave them unsupervised until you are absolutely certain of their bond and trust. Even then, it's good practice to ensure the bunny always has its safe space. Now, watching Rozer and Cricket groom each other and nap together is one of the most heartwarming sights. They chase each other playfully, and it's clear they adore one another. Their friendship is a testament to the fact that different species can form incredible bonds. If you're considering introducing a kitten and a bunny, don't let fear hold you back! With the right approach, you might just find yourself with two new BESTIES sharing your home, just like I did. It truly enriches our lives!
