If you see matted fur around their eyes, that's a huge red flag – it often means they've had discharge for a while. Squinting, cloudiness in the eye, or constant tearing could indicate anything from an infection like conjunctivitis to dental problems pressing on their tear ducts, or even a respiratory issue. In my experience, bunnies kept in unsanitary conditions, especially with high ammonia levels from accumulated urine and rabbit droppings, are much more prone to eye irritation and infections. Always check for a clean, calm gaze. Then there's their nose. A bunny's nose is constantly twitching, which is normal and adorable! What's not normal is a wet nose, discharge, or crusting around the nostrils. A healthy bunny's nose should be dry and clean. If you notice any sniffling, sneezing, or a runny nose, it could be a sign of a respiratory infection, often referred to as 'snuffles' (Pasteurellosis). This can be highly contagious and serious. I once saw a bunny with a really wet nose and after a closer look, the surrounding fur was all matted – a clear indication of ongoing issues. Sometimes, if the cage environment is poor, with lots of dust or old hay, bunnies can develop allergies or irritation that mimics more serious problems. That's why inspecting the entire environment, not just the bunny, is so crucial. Before you even consider bringing a bunny home, take a moment to observe these small but mighty indicators. Are their eyes bright and clear? Is their nose dry and free of discharge? Are they alert and curious, or are they lethargic and trying to hide? These are quick checks that can save you a lot of heartache and vet bills down the line. Remember, a healthy bunny often comes from a clean, spacious environment, free from the kind of dirty cage floors and potentially contaminated food that can lead to these health issues.
