🐰 I want to share how Baby Bunnies SQUEAK!
I use to think baby rabbits were silent… until I checked my first nestbox years ago.
At Spring Willow Ranch, these tiny Holland Lops started squeaking, and it’s one of the cutest surprise I’ve ever caught on video so I just had to share!

You know, before I discovered these little Holland Lops at Spring Willow Ranch, I was just like many of you – convinced that baby rabbits were pretty much silent. It was truly "Nature's best kept secret" that they could make such distinct sounds! But after witnessing it firsthand, and catching those adorable squeaks on video, it made me wonder: why do baby bunnies squeak, and what are they trying to tell us? It turns out, those tiny squeaks aren't just random cute noises. Often, a baby rabbit squeaking is a clear sign of distress or discomfort. They might be cold, hungry, or even feeling a bit lost if they've strayed from their littermates. It's their urgent way of calling out for their mama's attention, a tiny alarm signal in the big, wide world. When I first heard it, my immediate instinct was to quickly check on them. Usually, it's a simple fix like making sure they're snuggled together for warmth, or that mom has visited recently for a feeding. Occasionally, if a baby is accidentally nudged out of the nest, that high-pitched squeak is their desperate plea to be reunited. Beyond the squeak, attentive bunny parents (like us humans who adore them!) might notice other subtle baby bunny noises as they grow. Sometimes they'll make soft grunting sounds, especially if another bunny is nudging them or if they're settling comfortably into the nest. These are usually contented sounds, indicating all is well in their cozy world. As they get a little older, past the helpless newborn stage, you might even hear a soft purring or teeth grinding, which, like with adult rabbits, is a sign of extreme happiness and comfort – something truly rewarding to witness! It’s incredible how much communication happens even in such tiny creatures. Understanding these varied baby bunny noises has made my experience with our rabbits so much richer. It's like learning a whole new vocabulary, letting me connect with them on a deeper, more empathetic level. So, if you ever hear a little squeak from your baby bunnies, don't ignore it. Take a moment to observe their environment. Are they warm enough? Are they safely with their littermates? Has mom been around for their feeding? It's often their direct way of asking for a little help or reassurance. It’s an incredible insight into the secret life of these tiny creatures, and truly something you won't believe until you hear it yourself. Keep an ear out – you might discover your own "Nature's best kept secret" in the quiet corners of your rabbit hutch!
