Children are like Arrows in the Hands of a Warrior
Super great parenting book — Children are like Arrows in the Hands of a Warrior: Helping Children Find Faith, Love & Flight by Tammy Largin 🏹
Psalm 127:3: "Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward"
Proverbs 22:6: "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it"
The idea that 'children are like arrows' truly resonated with me after reading this incredible book! It's such a powerful visual – picturing our kids as these finely crafted arrows, full of potential, and us, as parents, being the bow. It makes you pause and think: where am I aiming? Are we truly equipping our 'soldier's arrows' not just for worldly success, but for a life of faith and purpose? For a long time, I think I focused too much on just getting through the day, or ensuring my kids hit certain milestones. But this metaphor shifted my perspective. It's not just about raising good kids; it's about raising children who understand they are a gift from the Lord, destined for something greater. It’s about being intentional with every moment, understanding that each lesson, each conversation, is part of shaping that arrow. One of the biggest takeaways for me was the emphasis on 'teaching children the right way to live.' It's not enough to hope they pick it up. Proverbs 22:6 really comes to life here – we have to actively train them. For us, this looks like consistent conversations about our values, not just when things go wrong, but every day. It means showing them grace, teaching them forgiveness, and modeling what it looks like to lean on faith. It’s about creating a home environment where loving others and seeking God are normal, everyday occurrences. And oh, the patience required! There are days when I feel like my aim is completely off, or my bow arm is tired. That's when I remember the prayer from the image: 'Lord, give me the wisdom and patience to always point my children to you!' It’s a constant surrender, admitting I don't have all the answers, but I can point them to the One who does. It's about planting seeds of faith, knowing that God is the one who brings the growth. Thinking about 'children are like our arrows and as parents we are the bow,' it truly highlights our responsibility. We're not just guardians; we're guides. We're teaching them how to fly, how to navigate the winds of life, and ultimately, how to hit their mark. This isn't about rigid rules, but about cultivating a deep-seated love for God and others, giving them the moral compass they need. It’s about helping them understand their unique purpose, the one God designed them for. It’s a challenging but incredibly rewarding journey, knowing that each child is a precious heritage entrusted to us, and our role is to help them find their faith, love, and ultimately, their flight into the world with purpose. This parenting philosophy isn't just theory; it's something I'm actively integrating into our daily life. For instance, when conflicts arise between siblings, instead of just solving the argument, we talk about how we can show love and forgiveness, reflecting God’s character. When they face challenges at school, we discuss how faith can give them strength and courage, and how their uniqueness is a part of God's design. It’s about turning everyday moments into opportunities for spiritual formation. The book, and these scriptures, have truly given me a renewed sense of purpose in my parenting. It's not about forcing my children into a mold, but about understanding their individual strengths and weaknesses, and helping them develop into the unique individuals God created them to be, always pointing them back to Him. Each child is a distinct arrow, and our job as parents is to understand its unique trajectory and help launch it successfully. It's a journey that requires constant learning, prayer, and a deep reliance on divine wisdom. It’s comforting to know that we don’t have to do it perfectly, but we are called to be faithful stewards of these precious gifts. This perspective transforms parenting from a daunting task into a purposeful, Spirit-led adventure.
