Squirrel Chooses His Favorite Nut

After countless hours spent observing my local squirrel friends, I've gathered some insights into what truly makes a 'FAVORITE nut' for them! It's not just about what's available; there's a real science and preference behind their choices. While my little buddy in the picture clearly picks his FAVORITE nut with gusto, it got me wondering: what makes a nut truly irresistible to these adorable foragers? I've noticed that generally, squirrels are huge fans of nuts that are rich in fat and protein, which are essential for their energy and survival, especially during colder months. Top of the list for many squirrels seems to be acorns. Yes, the humble acorn is a staple for many species of squirrels, offering a balanced nutritional profile. I often see them burying these first! Then there are walnuts and pecans. These are often high on their preference list because they're relatively easy to crack open (for a squirrel!) and offer a good energy boost. I've personally seen a squirrel bypass several other options just to get to a fresh pecan. Hazelnuts and almonds also get a lot of love. They're packed with good fats and nutrients. When I offer a mix, these are usually gone quite quickly. However, I've learned that not all nuts are created equal, and some should be given sparingly or avoided. For instance, while squirrels will eat them, peanuts aren't technically nuts (they're legumes) and aren't as nutritionally dense for squirrels as tree nuts. Plus, commercial peanuts are often roasted and salted, which isn't great for them. Same goes for cashews – high in fat but less natural to their diet. It's always best to offer unsalted, raw nuts. The salt can be detrimental to their health. And variety is key! Just like us, squirrels enjoy a diverse diet. Providing a mix allows them to choose what their bodies need most at a given time. Observing which nut your backyard squirrel picks his FAVORITE nut from a selection is part of the fun. It’s like a little game of discovery! I sometimes lay out a small assortment – an acorn, a walnut, a pecan – and watch to see which one disappears first. It's truly fascinating to see their individual personalities and preferences come through. Who knew nut selection could be so entertaining and insightful? Happy feeding!
