Reno series part II: Selecting our ID
Before I get to discussing how we selected our ID - I'll share briefly abt how I sourced them first. Tbh it was pretty simple, I browsed a few portfolios on Qanvast and then submitted an enquiry form. Qanvast automatically asks 5 IDs to reach out to me and those are who we eventually met up with. I'm sure there are other ways to source for them such as renovation fairs, referrals from friends, tiktok/IG or even google.
For us, we stuck to the Qanvast referrals and then searched for customer reviews online just to make sure they are reputable. All of the IDs we eventually engaged are alw in the "top ID" lists on google articles so I'll exclude firm reputation out of this criteria list.
Here's the 5 basic criteria that we looked out for when selecting our ID! Next, I will share the actual evaluation of the top 3 IDs that we shortlisted. 😁

When selecting an interior designer (ID), it's important to go beyond just the basics and really explore how they fit your unique needs. One crucial aspect I learned is how detailed and structured the quote is. A good ID should clearly specify cost per square foot and give a transparent breakdown of every item involved. This clarity helped us avoid hidden charges later. During our meetings, we also assessed how well the IDs knew their documents and whether they remembered our specific requests. Their organizational skill gave us confidence in their professionalism. Next, the ability to explain design options and discuss pros and cons allowed us to make informed decisions. I appreciated when the ID shared valuable knowledge, making every session feel like a learning experience. Timely responsiveness was another big factor. Prompt replies and addressing our feedback showed dedication and respect for our time. Equally important was feeling comfortable during long discussions. Matching vibes, communication style, and language helped build good rapport which is essential for smooth collaboration. Finally, we carefully reviewed what was included in the quote — from electrical work and door replacements to the number of design drafts and extra perks like reward miles. Understanding possible variations in orders (VOs) upfront prevented unexpected surprises. For anyone on the lookout for an interior designer, I highly recommend using trusted platforms like Qanvast, checking customer reviews, and ensuring your shortlisted IDs meet these comprehensive criteria. This approach made our renovation process smoother and more enjoyable.
